Donovan Mitchell Diaries Offer Insight Into Cavaliers’ Season

Donovan Mitchell, the star guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, is providing fans with a unique perspective on his life both on and off the court through a monthly diary featured on Andscape. As the 2025-26 NBA season unfolds, Mitchell reflects on various challenges and experiences that shape his journey with the Cavaliers.

In his third post to the series, Mitchell talks about some of the changes he had to adapt to after returning to Cleveland from a short stay. As he himself described it after returning, he experienced a bit of culture shock, having “nothing…for two or three days.” This time of transition illuminates the emotional and mental side of professional athletics, which the casual fan may not always understand.

The Cavaliers have experienced some growing pains this season. Now, Taurean Prince’s absence has put even more pressure on the remaining players. While Mitchell admits that injuries and absences can affect team chemistry, it’s clear that he expects a certain level of toughness. He stated, “We’ve got to find a way to do the little things really well, especially when guys are out.”

Mitchell’s love for the game isn’t just tied in with professional pursuits, but goes back to his childhood roots. In particular, he recalls wanting shoes as a young boy. His nickname came from the custom basketball shoes he frequently sported by Eddy Curry, the former NBA player. Now, as a long-time veteran, those flashy kicks are replaced with a pair of Nike Hyperdunks that he’s customized for special occasions. Most recently, he’s worn Black History Month Kobe’s done up in New York Knicks colors and Christmas themed Hyperdunks.

Given Mitchell’s New York roots, his first Christmas Day game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden will surely be a special occasion. The venue—famed Fenway Park—is iconic, and the fact that he’d be playing his first game against his hometown team makes it even more special. As Mitchell comes into this matchup, he’s averaging an incredible 24.7 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds. This remarkable accomplishment follows a grueling regular season of 539 total games played. Last year, he did take the Cavs to an astounding 64-18 record. His leadership helped guide them to the top finish in the Eastern Conference, proving how essential he was to their playoff success.

While these milestones accomplishments are important, Mitchell is quick to look ahead and across the river. After the most recent home match against Charlotte, it became evident that he had absorbed a punch. He admitted the squad still has to improve the mental aspect of the game. “Mentally, we got to find it. … We’re not a playoff team right now,” he remarked candidly.

In looking back on how the team grew by the end of the season, Mitchell seemed proud of his younger teammates. He noted, “I always give a shout out to our young guys because they’ve been [expletive]. They’ve been unreal.” This comment is an indication of his appreciation of the hard work from young players. Their new teammates are stepping up with great courage to the vacancies produced by injuries.

Donovan Mitchell continues cataloging his rookie season in his diary. Fans have taken an interest in his personal development as much as his professional journey. His observations serve to illuminate the deep emotional struggles that often afflict elite athletes. They go even further by highlighting the teamwork, brotherhood and grit required to succeed in the NBA.
