Luka Doncic is the key X-factor for the Los Angeles Lakers. He is now playing on the final two years of his contract. The 26-year-old guard—though he’ll turn 27 before the start of the season—acquired by the Lakers at the trade deadline in February does have a player option for 2026-27. As always, the complex yet wildly successful franchise is still doing things to get ready for the new season. Beginning August 2, they’ll have the opportunity to sign him to a four-year, $222 million extension.
Doncic’s impact on the Lakers would not stop with just his on-court skills. He’s been the most aggressive in courting fellow player Marcus Smart. Smart, who was selected No. 7 overall by the Boston Celtics in 2014, is as sharp as his focus. Smart’s addition comes at a crucial time, as he aims to bolster the team’s defensive capabilities. Smart, now 31 years old, has played in just 54 total games over the last two years with Washington and previous stops like the Memphis Grizzlies. He doesn’t want to let this setback ruin his plans to make a transformative impact.
There has been a lot of movement on the Lakers’ roster this offseason as well. Dorian Finney-Smith recently signed with the Houston Rockets this offseason. This transition creates incredible opportunities for new entrants to enter key positions. Former NBA shooter JJ Redick is coaching there and he’s back for a second season. He hopes to mold Smart and maximize the potential of his varied and talented staff.
The Lakers are depending on the steady hand of veteran Mike Conley. With 108 career playoff games in the bag, he is now tied with Smart for the 18th most among active players. Conley’s experience will be absolutely essential as this young team faces the pressures of a playoff run for the first time in over a decade.
Smart expressed confidence in his new team, stating, “I think we stack right up there with the best of them.” His commitment to excellence is in line with the aspirations of a historic franchise eager to get back atop the championship contender mountain.
He further elaborated on his optimism, saying, “And I think we can [compete]. Our ceiling is high. I think there’s no ceiling.” This enthusiasm is shared by Doncic, who is poised to lead and support his teammates in achieving their collective goals.
The Lakers prepare for what should be a highly talented season moving forward. First, all eyes will be on Doncic and his acceptance of and effort to lead this team in the right direction. Together, his finesse and Smart’s fire could make them an all-time great franchise duo.
