Donald Trump will be shooting his way into Bethpage Black late Friday. He’ll be the only American with Combat Experience on that opening day of the Ryder Cup. Instead of showing up on time, he made a choice. This savvy political maneuver frees him from the hours-long security chokepoint that has plagued other recent mega-events marred by controversy.
Similar security needs surged earlier this month during the U.S. Open men’s tennis final in New York. Instead, tens of thousands of fans waited in hours-long lines just to get into the event. Trump was present for that event on September 7, where he witnessed young Carlos Alcaraz dispatch Jannik Sinner in a thrilling four-set match. The event seen in person endured a 37-minute delay to the match when further security surrounding Trump’s presence suffocated the match.
The first match of the opening foursomes session is scheduled for 7:10 a.m. ET, followed by a fourball session set to commence at 12:25 p.m. ET. Professional golfer Keegan Bradley is convinced that Trump will be there to greet him on the first tee once he finally arrives at the Black Course. He can’t wait for that moment.”
Bradley expressed his enthusiasm about Trump’s attendance, stating, “I’m deeply honored that the president of the United States is going to come support our team at the Ryder Cup.” He went on to say that he can’t wait to see what happens when Trump shows up.
Derek Sprague, the CEO of the PGA of America, acknowledged that they did indeed extend Trump an invite for the Ryder Cup. He announced this news first “several weeks ago.” His interest in golf isn’t new — his organization, the Trump Organization, owns a number of golf courses around the world.
The buzz over Trump’s upcoming visit, meanwhile, is electric. Golfer Scottie Scheffler said he was unsure if the former president will address the U.S. team before competition begins. “I don’t think he has any plans to address us as a team, but I’m sure if things go well, we’ll hear from him this week,” Scheffler remarked.
Scottie Scheffler shared his thoughts on Trump’s passion for golf, adding, “The president is kind of funny. He loves the game of golf. He loves supporting golfers, and I get a call or a text from him sometimes after wins. He just loves the game of golf, and he’s one of those guys when you’re around him, he does such a good job of, like, feeding confidence into everybody around him.”
