Dolphins Tight End Jonnu Smith Seeks New Deal Amid Steelers Talks

Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, 29, is currently engaged in contract discussions as he aims to secure a new deal with his current team. Jonnu Smith’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed that the player’s “first choice” is to remain in Miami. This sentiment makes all the sense in the world, considering the fact that Smith is deeply trotted into the Dolphins, whom he calls his “dream team.”

Jonnu Smith joined the Dolphins last season and made an immediate impact, leading the team in receptions. As a tight end, he broke all-time franchise records for tight end receptions and receiving yards. His strong and versatile play led him to earn his first Pro Bowl selection. He ended the season with a staggering 169.4 passer rating. Only Brock Bowers, Trey McBride and George Kittle finished with more receiving yards among tight ends on the national scene.

The tight end’s existing deal guarantees him $4.8 million for 2025. He’s already enthusiastic about reworking this agreement so that it’s more suited to his impact on the team. Rosenhaus emphasized Smith’s desire to stay in Miami, stating, “Here’s what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That’s his first choice.”

Smith’s ties to the Dolphins run deep. Having lived in Miami full-time in the offseason, he took advantage of this to attend the local Florida International University (FIU). His exceptional run with the Dolphins has earned him a role as an essential piece of the team’s offensive puzzle. Rosenhaus said, “He’s coming off a historic season last year. That was the single best season, ever, for a Miami Dolphin tight end! He has been an immensely valuable presence and influence on this veteran team.

The Steelers have reportedly reengaged discussions with Smith on a long-term deal. At the same time, negotiations with Miami go on. Even still, Smith insists that Miami is his top choice and what he wants the most.

Arthur Smith, who was Jonnu Smith’s tight ends coach and offensive coordinator in Tennessee, developed a very deep bond with him. Then, not long after, Smith lured Jonnu to the Atlanta Falcons via trade. This history presents yet another layer of complexity to Smith’s precarious situation as he scours for a deal.

Even as other teams — including the Dolphins — expressed interest, Jonnu Smith’s desire to sign with the Dolphins never wavered. Rosenhaus concluded with optimism about the future: “Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami.”
