Dolphins Seek Cultural Revitalization After Disappointing Season

The Miami Dolphins find themselves at a crossroads after a disappointing 2024 campaign, going just 8-11 on the year. New head coach Mike McDaniel made a public challenge to his players in their last team meeting, January 5, 2022. This was just a couple days after their heartbreaking season ending loss to the New York Jets. This meeting was all about addressing the team’s pitfalls, like injuries and lack of morale. McDaniel focused on the urgent need for accountability and collaboration.

McDaniel’s team rules are simple yet impactful: “protect the team,” “no excuses,” and “be on time.” During the course of the season, players demonstrated their commitment to the latter rule by being on time and ready to participate in events. Yet, issues remained simmering in the locker room, especially with some players engaging in conduct that hurt team morale.

McDaniel’s Leadership and Approach

Intensity aside, McDaniel’s style as a head coach has captured the national imagination due to its frankness and vulnerability. One of his players with the Dolphins, Aaron Brewer, explained how much of a different breed McDaniel is compared to others in the league. He encourages open dialogue and communication so that players are not afraid to voice their opinions and frustrations.

“I think what McDaniel does a great job of is preaching the player locker room and I think it needs to come from us as players and leaders and captains as well as the staff,” – Christian Wilkins.

That kind of thinking would make the whole effort sound like a tightly integrated engine, though it has not been as smooth a ride as all that. Several reporters pointed out that Ramsey’s presence was really hurting the team’s morale. His persistent lateness to team events and regular practice absences helped create a suffocating culture.

Despite these challenges, McDaniel has no plans to relent on culture. His belief that leaders should not be afraid to confront difficult challenges is at the core of Young’s leadership philosophy.

Management’s Support and Expectations

Wednesday, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross emphatically reiterated his enduring belief in head coach McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier. He took this pledge after concluding the 2024 season. This commitment entails very specific expectations focusing on performance and cultivating the right culture within the organization.

Grier sought to clarify that Ross had not given any ultimatums to himself or McDaniel. Rather, the goal is to encourage the best possible improvement from within. He stated, “We can say all the stuff has changed, and words and everything… it doesn’t really matter. We have to go do it on the field and win games.”

This sentiment is echoed by the players organization wide as they realize that real change needs to come behind their statements. Austin Jackson emphasized the necessity for players to take an active role in shaping team dynamics: “It’s something we as the players decided.”

Challenges Ahead

As the Dolphins look towards a new season, they know that a sense of urgency is the name of the game. During the 2024 season there were some key places that showed a need for development. Injuries through the season limited their pass rush. At the same time, discipline issues with cornerstone players such as Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey raised red flags about the team’s morale.

As quarterback Tua Tagovailoa observed after that game, that was the tough part – nobody took accountability. He expressed dissatisfaction with their performance in critical moments, stating, “Anyone who knows football… knows that was not clean and that was not right, what we were doing at the end of the game.”

Additionally, McDaniel is reportedly committed to making sure everyone knows their place on the pecking order team. He stated, “If I worry about my job security, I won’t be doing my job — and I think that inherently is against all things that I believe in.”

While the Dolphins can’t help but look ahead to rebuilding for next season, they understand that there is a need to establish a winning mentality. McDaniel believes that fans desire success and emphasizes his commitment to achieving results on the field: “I think they want to win. And so do I.”
