In fact, the Detroit Lions have already started off the 2024 season on fire, averaging a whopping 33.2 points per game. They took a frustrating loss in week one, losing at home to the Green Bay Packers 27-13. Despite the loss, this is an exciting time for the young team as they ready themselves for future games. It was just the second time in the franchise’s long history that the Lions finished the season atop the NFL in points scored.
New offensive coordinator John Morton made it clear there’s nothing close to panic in the organization after that defeat. He admitted that despite their poor showing, there were still some encouraging signs from the club on which to build.
Outu r execution and attention to detail can be better,” Morton said. The bottom line is that this comes down to execution and attention to detail. When things are not overly complicated, players can think less and play faster and everyone will understand their responsibilities.
The Lions struggled with the same challenges that haunted the Packers’ offensive line. They only managed an average of 3.8 yards per play and a pitiful 2.1 yards per rush. Rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa made the most of his limited snaps, though, scoring a team-high 13-yard touchdown reception. He accomplished this with only 55 seconds left in the game! His contributions served as a reminder for what incredible offensive capabilities the Lions can continue to tap into down the line.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, a key wide receiver for the Lions, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to recover from this setback. We have an incredible group of young men in our locker room. They didn’t waver when we were in the weeds during our challenging first two years. Having huddled together in the trenches, as a team we were able to course-correct together.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell began his head coach reign with the Lions in 2021. He’s looking to prevent an 0-2 start for the first time since that season. The team knows that it will need to be executing better offensively if it wants to win in its next matchups.
Morton calmed the fears of fans as well as players themselves. In short, he said, “I’m encouraged! There were a lot of good things to take away from that game, and onto the next.” He recognized that while there were missed assignments during the game, it wasn’t solely one player who faltered but rather a collection of execution errors.
The Lions get ready for their next game. They have shown a commitment to continuously improve their overall strategy and performance. Now, with an even greater sense of unity and a rallying determination, the team is set to rebound and prove they have what it takes.
