Derwin James Jr. Inspires Graduates at University of Bridgeport Commencement

Derwin James Jr., a former Florida State All-American and current NFL star for the Los Angeles Chargers, delivered a commencement speech to remember at the University of Bridgeport. He encouraged graduates to take confidence and motivation with them as they start their next chapters. On May 14, 2023, James got to take the stage himself. As he did so, he was speaking to a packed house of jubilant graduates and their families.

In his powerful speech, James focused on building the resilience and personal fortitude. He remembered his past, his path to the NFL. Using those powerful experiences, he told us their radicalization of his life and how they transformed his views on success. “Your starting point doesn’t define your destination. What matters is the journey and the resilience you build along the way,” he said, urging graduates to find strength in their unique paths.

James attributed coach Jim Harbaugh as a major influence in him finding confidence in the public speaking space. This confidence proved vital as he stood before the audience, despite his initial reservations about giving a commencement address. He never expected to be in a boat like that. You would never have known it, because before he got on stage, he was the definition of cool. Days before graduation, James rehearsed his speech in the boys locker room lounge. He was more concerned about finding the best way to get his message across.

James has deep ties to the University of Bridgeport. His cousin, Herron Gaston, is vice president for external affairs at the college. That familial connection added a specialness to the celebration. James spoke proudly to a community that has given so much to him.

At the ceremony, James received his first honorary degree, a Doctor of Humane Letters. This distinction was an acknowledgment of his athletic excellence and a recognition of his profound philanthropy on behalf of society. He is a two-time nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year award. This award serves as acknowledgment and appreciation of his commitment to leveraging his platform for social impact.

Even in 2023, James was dealt one of the toughest hands. He rebounded so well that he was named first-team All-Pro for the third time and made his fourth Pro Bowl as well. Even more apparent is his mental toughness, fortitude and spirit. Throughout his remarks, he emphasized the need to embrace resilience and determination, both in athletics and life.

James took to his powerful bully pulpit to call upon the greatness within every graduate in accordance with Dr. “Because I feel like just by doing that, not only after practice, but before the game only in there, it’s a lot of pressure,” he stated, referring to the pressures he faces as an athlete and encouraging students to confront their own challenges head-on.

The graduation ceremony was not only a ceremony of accomplishment but an example of what hard work can get you. Powered by James’ experience, eloquence and vision, graduates departed infused with fresh determination and a sense of mission. His message really struck a chord with everyone in attendance, equipping them with what they need to accelerate into their futures.
