Derrick Henry Signs Landmark $30 Million Extension with Ravens

Derrick Henry’s gotten a two-year, $30 million contract extension from the Baltimore Ravens. This $260 million deal is a monumental step for both his individual career on and off the court, and the franchise’s overall history. The new agreement locks $25 million in guarantee money for the 31-year-old running back. He’s signed through the end of the 2027 season. This new contract raises Henry to the fourth-highest paid running back in the NFL. He’s going to be paid the mind-numbing rate of $12.3 million per season.

In the 2023 season, Henry didn’t just display elite, game-breaking ability. He shattered expectations. He averaged an impressive 5.9 yards per carry. He rushed for a record-breaking 1,921 yards, which made him the first player 30 years or older to hit that mark in NFL history. His stellar play led him to break a Ravens franchise record with 18 total touchdowns on the season.

As of today, Henry sits 19th on the NFL’s all-time rushing list. In fact, he’s gained an astonishing 11,423 yards over his career. This extension is particularly notable as it represents the largest contract in NFL history for a running back over the age of 30, underscoring Henry’s value and impact on the field.

Prior to this extension, Henry was playing on the last year of a two-year, $16 million deal. The new terms not only reflect his outstanding performance but indicate the Ravens‘ commitment to retaining one of the league’s premier running backs. Under the terms of Henry’s contract, he can make as much as $37 million during the next three years. This transaction cements his place as a foundational piece for the Ravens as they continue to build their future.

Both the Ravens’ front office and coaching staff have shared a faith in Henry’s talent and leadership on the field. His unique blend of speed, power, and endurance has made him the most dangerous matchup for defenses in the league year-in and year-out. He’s still not done shaming the world over ageism. Regardless, fans and analysts will be waiting with bated breath to see how he comes out of it over the next few seasons.
