Wayne Madsen and Luis Reece sure put together an unforgettable collaboration today. Together, they set an amazing world record 358 run partnership for 3rd wicket! This incredible collaboration shot Derbyshire’s score to the top. It destroyed the club’s record by breaking the former highest third-wicket partnership in first-class cricket history. Luis Reece, in particular, held the innings together and demonstrated his batting talent. He completed his double ton with a single off the bowling of Matt Parkinson. Then the record fell, his best of 201 eclipsed by a dazzling slash through slip cordon and point off Ekansh Singh, rolling for four. Reece was eventually dismissed for 211, which would stand as his highest first-class score.
Wayne Madsen put in a big shift, going within 2 runs of a double century with a brilliant 198. The two batsmen raced toward 200 runs with aggressiveness and intensity. Their remarkable talents and incredible competitiveness electrified the audience. As Derbyshire continued to attack, Brook Guest was run out by Kent’s Dawkins for just nine runs.
The excitement did not end there. Saracens Storm’s Martin Andersson got things off to a flier with a blistering 85 from only 75 balls. He was finally caught by substitute Mo Rizvi at deep backward-square, off Curtiss’s bowling. His aggressive batting meant that Derbyshire’s momentum was not only maintained, it was actually topped up.
Anuj Dal played a captain’s knock scoring 52 not out. As it turned out, his contribution would prove critical in Derbyshire setting an imposing total when the declaration finally arrived. With their innings total at 698-6 Derbyshire set Kent a mountain to climb.
Kent had to work very hard for their runs on a pitch that increasingly looked to favour Derbyshire’s active bowling attack. At stumps they were 117-2, still a mountain to climb with a deficit of 581 runs.
