In sports biz, Derbyshire County Cricket Club has announced a pre-tax profit of £11,000 for 2024 with pride. This success continues the club’s run of 11 surplus years in the last 12! This financial achievement comes despite a challenging season on the field, where Derbyshire finished at the bottom of the County Championship. The club attributes much of its financial success to sellout matches from last summer’s home T20 Blast games against Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, as well as the ‘Midlands Mania’ double-header at Edgbaston.
Derbyshire invested in its largest ever cricket budget. Despite this colossal increase, the money did not buy an improvement in on the field performance. Even so, the financial health of the club is very strong, attesting to smart management practices away from the pitch. Derbyshire chairman Ian Morgan said he was delighted that the bottom line was in the black.
“To be debt-free and able to safeguard our future in the current climate is a healthy position, however we must continue to work hard off-field to ensure we can compete out in the middle.” – Derbyshire chairman Ian Morgan
Next season, Derbyshire will start their Division Two season at home to Gloucestershire on Friday, April 4. Wayne Madsen will take over the captaincy for a second time, bringing leadership experience to a team eager to improve their standings.
The focus on sellout games and strategic financial management has allowed Derbyshire to maintain a rare financial surplus, providing a foundation to build upon for future seasons. Whether in terms of the investments they are willing to make in their cricket budget, there is a clear long-term perspective on successful investments, financially, competitively.
