Derby County snapped their five match winless run with a much needed 1-0 home win over Norwich City at Pride Park. The match, held on Saturday, saw midfielder David Ozoh score his first goal of the season, securing a much-needed win for the home team. This success came in time for Derby to make it a very timely victory. They were desperate to do something about their fortunes after going through an awful run of form.
From the start, the contest developed into a chess match with both teams limiting the other’s flow. Derby and Norwich came into the match with both sides needing a win having not won in their previous five matches. Tension permeated the room as each side struggled to puncture that feedback loop. The breakthrough would finally come in the 55th minute. Ozoh struck the perfect shot, fast and furious from 12 yards out, stuffing the ball into the upper left corner of the net!
Match Highlights
Norwich City started the match looking to create some early opportunities. It was in the 28th minute that Josh Sargent had a shot deflected over the crossbar, which was a testament to their early aggression. Derby’s defense stood stout against everything Norwich players threw at it. Schwartau fired into the side netting as the visitors continued to search for an opening but were faced with great resistance time and time again.
Derby County had plenty of chances as well. It was no surprise when Carlton Morris flashed a low ball across the six-yard box, forcing Norwich’s defense to sweat just a little. It was David Ozoh’s big moment that swung the match in Derby’s favor. His goal not only set the roof on fire for the home crowd, but lifted the belief from within his own team when they needed it most.
Norwich’s Struggles Continue
Though Norwich pushed for an equalizer through multiple attacking substitutions, the Canaries were unable to break through. In the 78th minute, Ante Crnac almost looked to settle things right there and then. His scorcher of a shot hit the far post and stayed out, leading players and fans alike to despair. Our visitors’ frustrations grew as they stood to keep pushing despite coming up short.
Liam Manning, head coach of Norwich City, on his team’s loss after the match.
“Of course it needs to change, we are in a results business and we need to win games.” – Liam Manning
Manning’s comments are representative of the overall tightness they’ve all been feeling inside the locker-room as they scramble to address their self-destructive ways.
Derby’s Resilience Shines Through
John Eustace, manager of Derby County, seemed every bit as relieved after pulling off the upset victory. Despite the odds stacked against them during the contest, he praised his players’ ability to bounce back and was still proud of their fight.
“I’m very proud of the group. Obviously first half we suffered, more than what I thought we would.” – John Eustace
Eustace settled a number of queries over his side’s lacklustre displays of late and leaned in to re-assure fans that improved results are on the horizon.
“I get that every time we lose a game I’m going to be asked similar questions, I’m not stupid on that front but my answer will always be the same. I’ll keep my head down and keep fighting, I’ll keep working until I’m told different.” – John Eustace
The win at Pride Park provides invaluable points for Derby County. Beyond that, it ignites excitement for better performances in their next contest versus Sporting Kansas City. Norwich City needs to get over this one quick. If they wish to keep from falling even deeper into the league table cellar, they must address their problems directly.
