San Francisco 49ers wide receiver DeMarcus Robinson recently pleaded not guilty to DUI Court in Los Angeles. In 2006, he pleaded no contest to the charge. On Tuesday, Robinson was sentenced after pleading guilty. This was a big milestone for his legal saga since his November arrest while as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.
Even more troubling is that Robinson’s deep legal woes didn’t just happen. They surfaced after his DUI arrest. In the plea agreement, the court dropped two other counts against Davidson. These were serious charges too, driving over 0.08 BAC and no valid DL. For Robinson, the plea had immediate and severe consequences. In addition, he will have to pay a $390 fine as well as participate in a three-month alcohol education program ordered by the court.
Last season, Robinson became as unstoppable on the field as he was behind the microphone. His 31 receptions and 505 receiving yards were career highs, and he led the Rams in touchdown receptions (seven). He played all 17 games and averaged an impressive 16.3 yards per reception, showcasing his ability to make impactful plays.
In March Robinson was signed by the 49ers to a two-year contract. The agreement is for $9.5 million and inseparably locks him into professional football. After accomplishing all of those requirements, he’s ready to move. Now, he is due to complete his probation in advance at the 18-month mark, which will result in the expungement of his case.
Jacqueline Sparagna, Robinson’s attorney, expressed confidence in her client’s progress during the legal process.
“Mr. Robinson has taken this process extremely seriously by already completing most of the terms of his probation. We expect that his probation will terminate early at the 18-month mark after which his case will be expunged,” – Jacqueline Sparagna.
Even if she clears these legal hurdles, it seems likely Robinson will be subjected to even more scrutiny by the NFL. Furthermore, the league’s alleged personal conduct policy grants the opportunity for further disciplinary action within the league. It has suspended her pending investigation of the circumstances surrounding her DUI arrest.
Robinson is looking to build on last season’s success with the 49ers this year. He demonstrates a strong commitment to ensuring that his team succeeds, all the while still moving to meet his remaining legal obligations. How he performs on and off the field will certainly be under a microscope. He wants to reflect on his first-term successes and cultivate his reputation in the as-yet-fluid CHOTF establishment.
