Deion Sanders Reflects on NFL Coaching Prospects: “I Couldn’t Coach Pro Ball”

Deion Sanders, head coach at Colorado, recently shared his thoughts on coaching in the NFL, particularly with the Dallas Cowboys, during his TV talk show "We Got Time Today." Sanders, a former Cowboy himself, expressed that he couldn't see himself coaching at the professional level, citing the intense nature of the pro game as being too much, even for someone known as "Prime Time."

The Dallas Cowboys last appeared in a Super Bowl in 1996, featuring stars like Sanders, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Charles Haley. Reflecting on those days, Sanders noted the intensity of practices alongside Aikman in the 1990s. Despite the team's interest in him for their head coaching vacancy last month, Sanders remained at Colorado. The Cowboys chose to promote offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer instead.

Former teammate Troy Aikman commented on Sanders' suitability for the role with the Cowboys, stating,

"For Dallas, Deion would have been a really good fit because he would have commanded the room, and his personality is such that people would have known that he was in charge." – Troy Aikman

However, Sanders made it clear that he has no aspirations to coach in the NFL. During his talk show, he emphasized,

"That's why I say, I couldn't coach — I know it was cute — but I couldn't coach pro ball, because the way they practice, the way they go about it, I couldn't take it." – Deion Sanders

Sanders' decision to stay at Colorado comes after a successful season where the Buffaloes went 9-4, with cornerback-wide receiver Travis Hunter winning the Heisman Trophy. Sanders currently holds a 13-12 record over two seasons with Colorado.

Even though some former Cowboys were perturbed by team owner Jerry Jones not pushing for an official interview with Sanders, he remains resolute in his decision. He told "60 Minutes" in 2022 that NFL openings did not interest him and reiterated his commitment to coaching college football.

Aikman also reflected on Sanders' long-standing sentiment about not needing to pursue NFL opportunities. He remarked,

"You didn't need a call from me." – Troy Aikman
