The San Francisco 49ers are facing a significant shake-up this offseason as star wide receiver Deebo Samuel has officially requested a trade. This development comes after a challenging season for Samuel, who recorded 806 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns, marking arguably his worst performance since joining the NFL. Despite this, his career statistics remain impressive: 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 202 carries for 1,143 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. Drafted by the 49ers in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Samuel has established himself as a versatile offensive weapon.
In the 2021 season, Samuel achieved remarkable success, becoming only the third player in NFL history to record 1,000 receiving yards with at least five rushing and five receiving touchdowns. He ended that season with 77 receptions for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns, in addition to 59 carries for 365 yards and eight touchdowns. His stellar performance earned him a first-team All-Pro selection. However, the current trade request highlights a new chapter for both Samuel and the 49ers organization.
The decision to accommodate Samuel's trade request stands in contrast to 2022 when the 49ers signed him to a three-year, $71.5 million extension. This time around, the franchise is willing to explore trade options despite the financial implications. The restructuring of Samuel's contract in September means that trading him before June 1 would result in a $31.55 million dead money cap hit. However, the team could use a post-June 1 designation, which would decrease this cap hit to $10,751,753 spread over two years.
Samuel is due a $15.4 million option bonus on March 22, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. His trade request comes at a critical juncture for San Francisco, as they focus on negotiating a mega-contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy and another deal for star tight end George Kittle. Samuel's departure could free up resources but also leaves a gap in their offensive roster.
As one of the most dynamic players in the league, Samuel's ability to perform both as a wide receiver and running back has been a game-changer for the team. Notably, he holds the record for the most rushing touchdowns by a wide receiver since at least 1960, with 20 scores. His versatility will be missed if he departs from the team.
Currently recovering from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee, Samuel remains a valuable asset and is projected to be a top option if traded. The injury has not deterred his role as a key player, and teams looking to acquire him will be considering his high impact potential. The 49ers are navigating this situation amid an important offseason filled with strategic decisions.
In his comments about the trade request, Samuel acknowledged some frustration with the situation.
"You read what you read. [I'm] a little frustrated for sure." – Deebo Samuel
He also reflected on the difficulty of discussing his future with head coach Kyle Shanahan.
"It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have," – Deebo Samuel
The decision to explore trading Samuel marks a pivotal moment for both parties involved. The outcome could influence not only the composition of the 49ers roster but also their prospects in upcoming seasons.
