DeChambeau Bounces Back with Impressive Second Round at Open Championship

PGA Tour star Bryson DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open winner, hit the bottom at the outset of the Open Championship. He returned to the fray with an astonishing recovery in round two. Reeling after a maddening round one, DeChambeau even contemplated leaving the tournament early. In spite of all that, he soon bounced back, showing his ferocity and prowess on the pitch.

On Thursday, DeChambeau looked lost, grinding his way to an ugly 78. He missed over 28% of the fairways and hit just 39% of the greens in regulation. Consequently, his round was totally free from birdies. “I woke up this morning, and I said, ‘You know what? I can’t give up,’” he remarked, highlighting his determination to improve despite the adversity he faced.

… and it was an entirely different story on Friday for DeChambeau. He averaged over 50% of his fairways hit. He complemented his efforts with a stellar 6-under 65, which was one of the lowest rounds of the day. This impressive showing pushed him back up to 1 over par, right onto or just above the ever-changing projected cut line. DeChambeau went on to explain how great the conditions were on the second round. He said they were some of the finest the course had seen in the first two days.

“I really persevered through some emotionally difficult moments,” he said after his strong performance. He just made all the same shots again just like the first go-round. This demonstrated not only his incredible adaptability but his profound understanding of links golf. “I’ve played the same as I did yesterday. That’s links golf for you,” he added, emphasizing the challenges and unpredictability of the game.

DeChambeau’s return serves as an example of mental toughness, self-discipline, and the constant quest to be better. He endured excruciating challenges in the first round, but he would not be defeated. Instead, he started his attention on the big tournaments coming to our shores in 2026. He agreed that learning how to play links golf, first and foremost, is essential for any player looking to reach the top level of the game. “In order to be a complete golfer, you’ve got to win over here. That’s something I’ve struggled to do,” he explained.

As DeChambeau moves forward in the tournament, his focus will remain on maintaining the momentum gained from his second-round performance. The trick will be to keep this kind of performance up as he works his way through the weekend at Portrush.
