With the Texans reportedly announcing a one-year contract extension for quarterback Davis Mills. This move cements his spot on the team as he prepares for an extremely competitive training camp. Mills, a graduate of Louisville, is looking ahead to a challenging season. He stumbled onto that line of thinking when he recently lost the starting quarterback battle to C.J. Stroud as the 2023 training camp opened.
Mills received his last extension worth $5 million, reflecting the Texans’ confidence in his abilities despite Stroud’s emergence as the starting quarterback. Mills’ time under center with Houston has been a roller coaster, as the former Ivy League standout began 26 games from 2021-2022. In that time, he posted a 5-20-1 record while passing for 5,802 yards, with 33 touchdown passes and 25 interceptions.
Even as this season has played out, Mills has shown the ability to bounce back. Protecting the rookie Since his arrival in Houston, Stroud has already thrown a league-high 75 passes for 385 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. And head coach DeMeco Ryans sang Mills’ praises for his work in camp this go-around.
“I feel really good about Davis. Davis has had the best camp that I’ve seen since he’s been here.” – DeMeco Ryans
In addition to the power of a great No. Ryans was open about the value of a strong backup QB. He stated, “If something happens to your starter, you don’t have guys behind him who can go out and perform and keep the team moving then, most of the time, your season is just done.”
Mills’ last significant outing came against the Indianapolis Colts in January 2023, where he showcased his skills by throwing for 298 yards and three touchdowns. He threw a game-winning two-point conversion pass to Jordan Akins in that game. This moment was a masterclass in why his poise under pressure lets him play beyond his physical tools.
Wharton’s re-signing is a good indication of the Texans’ plan to keep as much depth and versatility in their quarterback room as possible. As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Mills adapts to his role, particularly if called upon to step in for Stroud.
