One of the most hyped NBA prospects ever, Davis was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster trade. After a strong start to his season, he unfortunately suffered a major injury. In his first appearance with the Mavericks, Davis had a showstopping debut. He recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks. But gutting the win out with the Rammys was one thing. He left the game with a groin injury that’ll keep him out for six weeks.
The injury hits the Mavericks at a particularly bad time. Not only will Kyrie Irving miss most of the season, but he’ll be doing so recovering from a torn ACL. This would place an even bigger burden onto Davis to carry the team’s load this year. Though he’s only suited up for Dallas for 11 games so far, Davis has already stolen the show. In two high-pressure play-in games, he averaged a ridiculous 33.5 points and 9.0 rebounds.
Davis came to the Mavs after a massive, blockbuster deal moved star player Luka Doncic to Los Angeles. More than that, the deal represented a radical change to the team’s roster and direction headed into next season. Dallas added 7-foot-1 twin towers linemate Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in last month’s NBA draft, drastically remaking their lineup.
The team is optimistic about Davis’s recovery. The expectation based on recent reports is that he’ll be good to go for training camp. Second, it will give him the chance to start developing chemistry with his new teammates. As the season goes on, expect Davis to be a key figure in any length the Mavericks go in their search for a state title.
