David Montgomery’s Playoff Return Fuels Lions’ Ambitions

Lions coach Dan Campbell has welcomed David Montgomery back to the team with open arms, as the running back prepares to make a significant impact in the divisional round of the playoffs. Montgomery, who recorded 775 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, has been instrumental as the Lions' second-leading rusher. His return comes after a knee injury sidelined him for Detroit's final three regular-season games. Montgomery's decision to opt for rehabilitation over surgery demonstrates his confidence in a swift recovery and his eagerness to contribute to the team's playoff aspirations.

Montgomery's performance this season positioned him as a key player in the Lions' formidable running back duo alongside Pro Bowler Jahmyr Gibbs, who led the team with 1,412 rushing yards and 20 total touchdowns. Known for his ability to gain tough yardage, Montgomery averages 2.0 yards after first contact, ranking fifth in the league for players with a minimum of 300 rushes. His return is expected to bolster the Lions' offensive capabilities, especially considering his impressive playoff history, where he rushed for 183 yards in last year's postseason run to the NFC Championship Game.

The decision to forego surgery was not made lightly. Montgomery sought three medical opinions before opting for a rigorous rehabilitation routine aimed at physically strengthening his MCL. He described the process as "pretty strenuous" yet essential to achieving his goal of returning in time for the playoffs. Despite challenges, Montgomery remains optimistic about his health and performance.

"I wouldn't be out there if I wasn't ready," stated Montgomery, expressing his readiness and confidence in his knee.

Montgomery's return is not only a physical boost but also a psychological one for the Lions. Coach Dan Campbell emphasized Montgomery's significance to the team.

"It'll mean a lot. Five's a big part of us. He's a huge part of us, and to me, he's a bell cow. He's somebody that is a tone-setter. He's a catalyst, so there's a place for him. There's a place for him here, so there'll be a place for him in this game. So it's going to be good to get him back," Campbell said.

The running back's excitement extends beyond just returning to play; he holds aspirations of leading the Lions to greater heights.

"I would have dreams about us going to the Super Bowl. It's crazy. And the closer we get, the more vivid they become. I have them like often. But I don't know how it's going to look with us getting there, but I know we're going to be there," Montgomery shared.
