David Flitcroft Champions Grassroots Football and Mental Health Awareness

Former professional footballer, David Flitcroft, is on a mission to change the future of grassroots coaching. He’s doing this by establishing FC Strikerz, a club that serves 100 children at this moment. He has planned 12 hours of instruction. His vision is to nurture new and diverse artistic talent, while addressing vital conversations such as mental health and suicide prevention.

Flitcroft’s drive for this initiative runs deep, especially considering his own life experiences. Having lost his father, John Flitcroft, to suicide in 2008, David knows the trauma so many families are suffering from now all too well. His father’s passing coincided with the twilight of David’s own playing career, leaving a profound impact on him. For the next two years after his father’s passing, David’s mother lived with him. Her presence no doubt conferred stability during what was a very tumultuous time. Though painful, this personal history inspires his drive to coach and mentor young players.

And every time he Flitcroft runs onto the pitch, his father is there in spirit. He reflects on the advice extended his way during his impressionable days. Flitcroft often describes himself as a product of John’s coaching approach. It’s that spirit Mo wants to nurture with his sons Gaz and Steve, and the other young talents at FC Strikerz.

Flitcroft’s devotion to non-league football goes further than just his coaching abilities. He’s even teamed up with some fellow luminaries, including former England supremo and veteran manager Sam Allardyce, to take part in a grassroots ‘coachathon’. This walk is to bring awareness to mental health and to raise money for suicide prevention projects. The coachathon will feature 24 teams. In addition, each team will create a project that strengthens community ties and extends a hand to people experiencing mental health issues.

Playsmart as a campaign also has a unique initiative where kids will give applause to their parents, coaches, and referees. This small gesture goes a long way in recognizing just how important these role models are, especially to young athletes. They lead with positivity and passion to create an inclusive environment for all—gracers, volunteers, and families.

From an early age, Flitcroft encountered formidable obstacles. He’s quick to give former Barnsley coach Keith Hill his credit for providing his most important support when he went through those dark days. It’s this experience that pushes him to want to return to the community by coaching and mentoring.

Flitcroft currently works with youth club FC Strikerz to enhance footballing potential. In addition, he works to ensure a safe and supportive environment for children’s development. He advocates for honest conversations around mental health. He inspires families to ask for assistance when they need it, and he reminds them that discussing their feelings and concerns is always okay.

Flitcroft is already getting excited about the next coachathon. He’s committed to using this platform to draw a much-welcome spotlight on mental health awareness. He thinks that you can bring together communities through grassroots initiatives like this. Together, they can break the stigma about mental illness and offer crucial help to those who need it most.
