David Coote, a well-known referee in English football, has recently faced significant upheaval in his career following a series of controversial incidents. He was the referee for the Liverpool vs. Aston Villa fixture on November 9, 2024. Almost immediately, Americans started to question his actions as a public servant. On December 9, 2024, PGMOL, the organization in charge of match officials in England, fired Coote. This resulted in a mandatory suspension starting on November 11, 2024. This step was prompted as law enforcement investigated his misconduct.
Coote’s challenges extend beyond his officiating career. In January 2025, despite it being illegal in most states, he unapologetically came out as gay. He opened up about how he didn’t come out to his parents until after turning 21 and came out to his friends at 25. His coming out story opened up the floodgates of just how truly tormented he was on the inside. He explained, “My sexuality is not the sole factor that brought me to be in that situation. I’m not telling an authentic story if I don’t say that I’m gay and that I’ve had real struggles dealing with hiding that.”
Investigations and Charges
The FA charged Coote on 17 June 2025 for comments made towards manager Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool. These comments, arguably the eventual outcome as well, referenced Klopp’s nationality – something the FA rightly identified as an aggravated breach of their rules. Coote’s comments have sparked an intense discussion among the soccer world. More importantly, they bring to light the crucial questions that must be answered about referees’ responsibilities away from and on the pitch.
Even after these charges, Coote was never charged with a gambling integrity violation. This lack of criminal penalties for Olympic and collegiate doctors has led to a flurry of media attention on current investigations involving members of the sport’s ruling class. The FA’s decision to take action against him is of particular note, as Coote is a registered supporter of Notts County. He has presided over other key matches including the 2023 Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle.
“I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well – a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being.” – David Coote
As a result of these blunders, UEFA has banned Coote from officiating until June 30, 2026. This ban will keep him from presiding over any UEFA-sanctioned games in this time frame. This ban has far-reaching ramifications given the trajectory of Coote’s on-field career. More than that, it keeps him from being able to compete with the best and brightest of European football.
Refereeing Career and Personal Struggles
David Coote started his refereeing career in the Football League before becoming a Premier League referee in April 2018. Throughout his career he’s met with many challenges. One big obstacle proved to be the FA’s investigation into an alleged incident during the now infamous October 2019 match between West Brom and Leeds. These events have had a tremendous impact on the way the public perceives him. Yet they have raised unprecedented doubts about the integrity of officiating in English football.
In recent interviews, Coote talked about how his issues with self-esteem are connected with his homosexuality. He noted, “I’ve had issues around my self-esteem – and that relates to my sexuality. I’m gay and I’ve struggled with feeling proud of being ‘me’ over a long period of time.” His personal reflections on these struggles highlight the mental and emotional intersections that exist between personal identity and professional purpose.
Coote’s experiences serve as a reminder of the challenges many individuals face when reconciling personal truths with societal expectations. He’s proving himself during a make-or-break season apart from the field. The odds against him have not stopped him from inspiring the sports world and the LGBTQ+ community.
Moving Forward
In a challenging year ahead, David Coote is faced with the loss of his vocation and the discovery of old identity. His situation illustrates the evolving landscape of sports officiating, where personal conduct is increasingly scrutinized alongside performance on the field.
As Coote has further explored his identity and career, he’s made authenticity a priority. He stated, “That’s led me to a whole course of behaviours.” This recognition represents a deep understanding of the ways in which personal battles spill over into work life. It would be the start of a whole new chapter in his adventure.
