David Beckham Honored with Knighthood for His Contributions to Sport and Charity

On Tuesday, King Charles III knighted David Beckham at Windsor Castle. Beckham, the legendary former England captain and Manchester United midfielder, beamed as he received the award. This honorary distinction weighs heavily on Beckham’s deep and formidable contributions to the body of sport and giving. At 50 years old now, Beckham takes his place among a select group of all-stars enshrined for their devoted work in the inaugural class.

Beckham also has the third most appearances—115—for the England national team as a senior men’s player. He was captain of the squad 59 times, too. His playing career is nothing short of legendary, boasting a record 394 games and 85 goals for Manchester United. During his time on the pitch, he’s represented some of the biggest clubs in the world, such as Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. Along the way he has won a staggering 19 major trophies.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Beckham has applied himself to philanthropy. Since 2005, he’s taken on a role as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF. His one-man mission is to make life better for all of the world’s most disadvantaged children. To advance this mission, he set up the 7 Fund, which aims to help children in need around the world.

In a joint statement released immediately after the ceremony, Beckham said he was “honored,” “humble” and “very proud.”

Beckham’s commitment to charitable work aligns with his new role as an ambassador for the King’s Foundation, an educational charity established by Charles in 1990. This new role will allow him to keep campaigning for the best education and support for young people wherever they happen to be in the UK.

Beckham’s story started on the mean streets of London’s grim east end. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, he had always dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and proudly representing his country. He remarked on his motivations, stating,

“All the things that I do, I do out of love.” – David Beckham

His wife, Victoria Beckham, now known as Lady Beckham following the knighthood, stands alongside him as they celebrate this monumental achievement.
