Dave Canales is currently the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. He certainly has the exciting challenge of reviving a franchise that hasn’t tasted playoff action since 2017. Known for his positive energy and strong connections to players, Canales aims to turn around the team’s fortunes while drawing upon his extensive experience under renowned coach Pete Carroll.
Canales, who previously spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach in Seattle under Carroll, has built a coaching philosophy that emphasizes accountability and a strong culture. His recent work with quarterback Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay really showcased his ability to revive players’ careers. Now, he’s bringing that same eye for talent to Carolina.
The Panthers haven’t won a playoff game since their last Super Bowl run in 2015, and they are banking on Canales to turn their trajectory around. His player-centric philosophy leans into empowering players and creating a culture of competition. General Manager Dan Morgan noted the connection between Canales and Carroll. Similarly, he underscored the fact that Canales has a multitude of characteristics that make Carroll such an effective communicator.
Canales’ relationship with Carroll goes beyond the NFL. He served under Carroll at the University of Southern California. This partnership has been instrumental for Canales, particularly as the first-time head coach found his footing in this spellbinding inaugural campaign. The first, and perhaps most crucial, is his frequent example of seeking counsel from Carroll, using their mentor-mentee relationship to dictate his strategic moves.
Unique phrases put you in a winning mindset Canales teaches connected phrases to foster a winning mentality. One of his favorites is “Tell the Truth Monday,” which encourages transparency and accountability within his players. This simple practice serves his larger purpose of building a team culture that makes athletes feel truly cared for and inspired.
“Just the constant reminders to believe, the constant reminders to prove to the guys what we can do when we play really good football,” Canales emphasized regarding his coaching style.
Under his tutelage, Canales has played a crucial role in securing NFL Rookie of the Year quarterback Bryce Young’s development. Young had a tough go in his first two seasons, but he has returned with a vengeance. Under Canales, he has an impressive 8-6 record as a starter in 2025. His turnaround should serve as a reflection of Canales’ focus on developing talent and instilling confidence in his players.
Carolina wide receiver David Moore remarked on Canales’ approach to team dynamics. “He treats everybody in the building the same.” Supporting this highly egalitarian philosophy is the Club’s inclusive approach to ensure each and every player feels valued and motivated.
Canales’ high-energy coaching style is infectious, resonating very well with players in large part because of his optimistic demeanor. “Where he really shines is creating culture and an environment in the building and the sense of competition and having games,” he noted. This contagious energy is essential for a team in desperate need of reestablishing its culture.
As part of his coaching mindset, Canales knows that the best structures have their foundations laid with core principles first. “It’s what’s at our core: taking care of the ball, the run game, toughness, all of our play styles, things that we talk about,” he stated, highlighting the principles that guide his coaching philosophy.
NFL executives who know each of them well see similarities between Canales and Carroll. “Listening to Pete and listening to Dave, it really is the same,” one executive remarked. That murky back and forth is a good sign, as it means Canales has taken whatever wisdom Carroll imparted but personalized and owned it.
“It’s all copy and paste. You make it your own, but it’s all copy and paste,” another executive echoed, indicating how Canales integrates Carroll’s strategies into his unique coaching style.
Whatever happens next, the Panthers should feel optimistic about their future. It’s not just his tactics that have them trusting Canales, though, but his potential to go beyond them as a leader who inspires change. The challenges ahead will test his resolve and adaptability, but those within the organization believe that he is equipped for the task.
