To make space for Davante Adams, their new 32-year-old wide receiver, the Rams released quarterback Stetson Bennett. He’s signed a deal that’s only two years in length but guarantees him $26 million. This deal transforms Adams’ career fortune. He’s motivated to put the cherry on top of an already sweet career individual resume that includes a slew of All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections.
Adams has spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets. That was, until now, as he has finally found a true home with the Rams. During those three years, he has developed great chemistry with QB Matthew Stafford. No doubt about it, their chemistry on the field has been electric. Entering Week 8, Adams is currently second on the team with 31 receptions and 431 receiving yards.
Last regular season, Adams produced a jaw-dropping 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns. He demonstrated his elite talent this year in Week 7, as he caught three touchdown receptions. That brings his total to six touchdowns tying him for third in the entire league!
The connection between Adams and Stafford is key to the Rams’ offensive success. Adams expressed admiration for Stafford’s abilities, noting that being teammates allows him to gain deeper insights into Stafford’s temperament and skills.
“Some things, sure, you have an idea about just from watching guys play. But, obviously, there are a lot of things you just learn more about when you’re on the same team,” said Adams. “Being teammates now … his toughness, his arm talent, his ability to make any throw and his poise – you get why he’s the player he is.”
Aside from chemistry, Adams stressed the importance of experience in establishing a successful partnership on the field.
“Those are the things you need to be in a huddle with a guy to get. That’s when you get a sense of the energy. You feel how they respond after they make a mistake. After he throws an interception, he’s still cool as hell,” he explained, referring to Stafford. “It’s not that he doesn’t care about making mistakes. It’s more like he’s just confident enough to know that he’s gonna be able to bounce back.”
Adams seems to already be building a rapport with new Rams wideout Puka Nacua, a rookie who’s younger than Adams himself. From his remarks, it seems like he’s pleased with this new developing collaborative spirit, something that’s going to be needed as they work toward realizing their championship goals.
“He’s a great football player who takes a lot of stress off me, and I do the same for him, so we feed off of each other,” Adams said about Nacua.
LA Rams’ efficiency on offense stems from the synergy of players, and their tactical tackling threat. Adams understood that his time with Stafford is more limited than with other players. He’s very much aware that Stafford provides a wealth of experience on the field.
“Obviously, I don’t have as much time with Matthew. But I also bring a lot of my own experience. So having a lot of experience on the field presents issues for our opponents,” Adams noted. “I’ve seen a lot and done a lot. They’ve done a lot together. We’re just gonna keep pushing that.”
Then-quarterback Matthew Stafford commended Adams for her investment in the locker room and leadership on the team.
“The guy is as prepared as they come,” Stafford stated. “He’s doing everything he can to play at a high level every single week and lead that receiver group, which is awesome.”
As he continues to perform at an elite level, Adams remains focused on his primary goal: winning a Super Bowl. His determination to do so is reflected in his pursuit of their common goal, their mission… working with his peers… enlisting help of his teammates.
“The Super Bowl – a championship – for me, that’s the only goal now,” Adams declared.
With his recent contract, Davante Adams has completed his goal of setting the market for his position and ensuring his legacy with the Rams. Among his many talents, with his fierce determination he finally might be the guy to lead the team in their championship quest this season and beyond. His deep experience will be an essential asset in addressing the challenges still to come. Healthy friendships with his brothers in arms will add fire to their shared motivation to succeed and win.
By nearly every metric Adams has already achieved impressive individual milestones on his historic ride thus far. He’s taken every team he has played for to great heights as well. It’s evident that this upcoming second act with the Rams is very special to him. He puts in the work in order to reap the personal rewards. Alongside this individual pursuit, he hopes to taste collective success by hoisting the highly sought-after Lombardi Trophy.
As he continues to impress both fans and analysts alike with his performance on the field, one thing remains certain: Davante Adams will stop at nothing in his pursuit of championship glory with the Los Angeles Rams.
