In an electrifying matchup at Lumen Field, Sam Darnold led the Seattle Seahawks to a stunning comeback victory against the Los Angeles Rams, overcoming two second-half interceptions to secure an 18-16 win. The game, marked by Darnold’s resilience and leadership, showcased the quarterback’s ability to rally his team despite facing adversity.
Darnold, who had earlier owned the Rams in college, threw two picks in three drives during the second half. His first pick was returned for a Rams touchdown. This play lifted them to a 23-14 advantage early in the third quarter. Darnold was certainly aware of his disappointing performance in the wild-card round this past January. The Rams sacked him nine times, finishing his Pro Bowl season with the Minnesota Vikings.
Despite these setbacks, Darnold remained undeterred. He rushed for 66 yards on 9 carries and was 22 of 34 passing for 270 yards with two touchdowns. His overall performance took a very critical turn in the final minutes of the game. He led a final-second field-goal drive, giving the Seahawks a comeback victory against the Indianapolis Colts on the final play.
In a nail-biting overtime period, Darnold came back to a Matthew Stafford touchdown drive with one his own — spike to kick the extra point. He threw a back corner end one to rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Then he capped it all off with an excellent two-point conversion, hitting Eric Saubert in the corner.
“I think for us there were a few miscommunication times where they were open deep in the back part of the field where we were just miscommunicating, wasn’t on the same page,” said Ernest Jones IV of the Rams, reflecting on the defensive struggles that allowed Darnold to capitalize.
Though 211 yards and three touchdown passes may seem convincing, Darnold’s road to victory certainly wasn’t smooth. On that note, here’s some encouraging comments from Seattle coach Mike Macdonald earlier this week. The same team that made the stats-inspired decision to pick a kickable extra point rather than attempt a two-point conversion at the end of the game. It was Darnold’s grit that ultimately led the young QB to steal the show with a comeback performance fans could only marvel at.
We weren’t worried one bit. “That’s Sam, Darnold is as competitive as they come,” said Macdonald, complimenting Darnold’s killer instinct and leadership intangibles. Retain the original scene setting with the Tonto National Forest. He’s an ultimate competitor. He’s a phenomenal leader.”
Smith continued that positive trend, displaying his versatility and playmaking skills throughout the contest. He scored Zach Charbonnet’s third-quarter scoring run with an impressive 46-yard gain on a screen pass. After the game, he was humbled by their performance while honoring the team’s spirit.
“I didn’t think we played our best football,” Darnold admitted, acknowledging that there were areas to improve upon. His teammates knew how he changed the game.
For a lot of fellows, this would be enough to discourage them and leave them beaten. That’s not how we roll, and that’s certainly not him,” continued Smith-Njigba. “That goes around to the whole team. Excited to have a leader in Sam.”
And, as the game wore on, the two sides continued to battle hard for control. The competitiveness of this division grew hotter by the second. During their last meeting this past November, the Rams picked off Darnold four times. It was a monumental Los Angeles defense that clinched the success for the Rams side 21-19 ultimately. This time Darnold proved to be a worthy opponent, playing with poise and maturity.
We’re loaded with guys that just grapple and do crazy stuff, Eric Saubert remarked after the game. And that’s the thing, it’s so amazing going to war with these dudes every week. And as you can tell, despite the odds, we always continue to charge forward.
