27-year-old Darnell Mooney of the Atlanta Falcons is preparing to make his return to the field. Now, he’s looking ahead to the 2023 NFL season, where his excitement and fervor will be on full display. Mooney has been on the injured list since July 24. He injured his right shoulder on the first practice of training camp. He only managed to miss the last game of the 2024 season due to injury. He notes that he thinks of his disease more like with soreness and stiffness.
Even though these hurdles are in his path, Mooney is hopeful through it all. He terms himself a “game-time decision” for Week 1. That should leave him poised to really make a splash and be of use to the Falcons when they take the field. This year, Mooney can’t wait to improve on the success he had during his breakout 2021 season. He finished the season with 64 receptions for 992 yards and scored a career-high five touchdowns.
Mooney has been back practicing this week, though only in a limited role on Wednesday and Thursday. He expressed his excitement about being back with his teammates, stating, “I feel good to be back practicing being with the guys and feel good to move around.”
Fifth round quarterback practice
He was most impressive during practice, when he had a highlight-reel moment. He had a fantastic diving grab on a pass from quarterback Michael Penix Jr. After the two have worked out a ton together over the offseason, Mooney believes they are on the same page. He noted, “Connection feels good. We had a lot of work this offseason. We communicate a lot, too, talk [to each other], and yeah, I feel like everything’s smooth.”
Mooney says he’s loosened up and liberated during practice these days. This encouraging sign increases his chances of being able to play in the season opener. “Got some things we got to look at at the end of the week, but like I said, I’m feeling good,” he remarked.
The Atlanta Falcons are looking forward to their first game. Fans and teammates alike are crossing their fingers that Mooney can get back on his toes and do what he does best – making an impact. His performance last season showcased his skills and importance to the team’s offense, and his presence would undoubtedly enhance their chances for success in the upcoming games.
