Danny Rohl has been formally appointed as Rangers head coach. He comes in with experience galore and a deep connection to former Bayern Munich and German national team coach Hansi Flick. At only 36 years of age, Rohl is eager to leave his mark on Ibrox. As many have noted, he promises to foster a culture of victory in the locker room.
Rohl’s appointment comes as the Rangers are intensifying their efforts to build their roster. They’ve invested over £34 Million in buying up 14 players in the summer transfer window. His ambition is clear: Rohl prioritizes winning titles and intends to leverage his experience and relationships in the world of football to achieve this goal.
A Strong Relationship with Hansi Flick
Rohl’s relationship with former national team manager Hansi Flick has been a foundation of his career. Rohl has worked in lockstep with Flick on the German national team and at Bayern Munich. Thanks to this experience, he has received some invaluable insights from one of football’s most revered coaches. Together, they enjoyed historic success, winning seven trophies in two seasons, including the coveted UEFA Champions League.
“I’m very close still with Hansi Flick, I think we speak many times in a month,” – Danny Rohl
Rohl highlighted the value of their relationship, pointing out how he can always lean on Flick to guide him when necessary.
“If I need something, then I can ask him. I think this is strong; we have a good relationship, and we’ve worked four years in a row together and we’ve won a lot of good titles together.” – Danny Rohl
Support from Flick goes beyond just strategic counsel. It includes life stuff too. Heading into this crucial stage of his coaching career, Rohl likes to have someone like Flick in his corner.
“It’s always great to have such a message from such an experienced coach. It’s also good to know when you need a call, then you can call him, and you can speak about football or sometimes personal or private things.” – Danny Rohl
Building His Backroom Team
As Rohl begins to find his footing in his expanded state role, he’s simultaneously working to finalize his backroom staff. He’s keen to add a former Rangers player to his coaching structure. This latest decision reflects his ongoing commitment to ensuring that the team’s identity and culture is strong from top to bottom.
Rohl has collaborated with Chris Powell before, during their time together at Sheffield Wednesday. Now, he hopes to entice the right people to work with him, to ensure a shared vision for success at Rangers. He’s not shy about admitting how his rich, varied experiences have hugely informed his distinct coaching philosophy.
“My former managers like Ralf Rangnick and Ralph Hassenhutl, you get from every coach something different, and this is great.” – Danny Rohl
Rohl will work alongside sporting director Kevin Thelwell and his son Robbie on transfer decisions, ensuring that the club’s strategic direction aligns with his ambitions for the team.
Focusing on Winning
Rohl’s straightforward coaching style comes with a focus that’s very much on winning. He hasn’t shied away from having the opinion that even draws are not enough for a club with Rangers’ ambitions.
“I think this is what we have to understand now, it’s about how we can win games, and this is the most important key point.” – Danny Rohl
More broadly, he hopes to cultivate a winning mindset among the team. This ambition is in line with his successful record of accomplishment in prior leadership positions. More than anything, Rohl is concentrated on bringing home championships. He intends to use the success of recent player investments from the Rangers to create a strong competitive team and record a proper challenge for silverware.
