Daniel Levy has successfully run Tottenham Hotspur as chairman for 25 years. His tenure thus far has produced a polarizing legacy that’s inspired awe—and anger—across the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Indeed, during his 14-year tenure the country club experienced unprecedented wins. It was failing on a lack of obvious shiny silverware and (to use an English euphemism) deepening malaise from fans.
With Levy at the helm, Spurs find themselves in a position envied by most clubs across the world. Under his stewardship, the squad enjoyed consecutive FA Cup semi-final runs. They were regularly competing for the top spots in the Premier League. Under his leadership as chairman, Spurs enjoyed record finishes of second, third and third in the league. This is a testament to the club’s unwillingness to accept anything but success at the highest level of competition.
These achievements come with significant caveats. Levy had brought in two pieces of silverware during his time. What he’s achieved is frequently clouded by the two decades he operated without winning a single major title. Last year, supporters showed their displeasure through visible, audible protests. They yelled, “Levy out,” signaling in the clearest of terms their displeasure with Levy’s direction.
During his time, Levy has focused on making sure the club can compete with top tier teams. This strategy is intended to increase revenue and enhance the club’s brand. He was involved in 15 semi-finals and seven finals, which underscores his commitment to making Spurs a formidable force in English football. As Giorgio Chiellini pointed out after a Champions League match in 2018, such a preference “kills the game.” For that, he explained, “They always miss something at the end.” This sentiment resonates with many fans who feel that despite close calls, the ultimate goal of securing significant trophies remained elusive.
Recently, Levy reflected on his time at Spurs, stating, “When I’m not there, I’m sure I’ll get the credit.” This challenge reflects the nuanced nature of his legacy. It further demonstrates a hope that one day, history will judge him more favorably once he departs from the club.
When it comes to managerial appointments, Levy’s record has been disastrous. Since the exit of Mauricio Pochettino, a staggering five head coach hires in a half-decade. Antonio Conte, maybe the most recent big-name hire, was described as a win-now manager. Over time, he did lose his patience with what he viewed as the club’s lack of ambition and overall direction.
Levy’s penny-pinching financial strategies have succeeded in placing Spurs among the top spenders in the transfer market. During that time, his was the fifth-highest spend among clubs in the Premier League. Chairman Daniel Levy is intent on raising Spurs to the next level with this massive investment in talent. Unfortunately, this lofty ambition has not always led to success on the field.
Although the obstacles endured over his reign can’t be overlooked, neither can Levy’s transformational impact on Tottenham Hotspur. He has overseen significant developments within the club, including the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium that symbolizes Spurs’ aspirations for greatness.
