Jones was lost for the season due to a torn ACL. He’s established to be back for the Indianapolis Colts’ training camp as they prepare for the 2024 season. This ambitious timeline follows a long and arduous recovery journey, which involved surgery to fix the torn Achilles.
We assume that the Colts are very happy about Jones’s breakout 2023 campaign. Not only did he lead the team to their first winning season in history, but he coached them to the #1 seed in the AFC South. While this was an impressive victory, we felt that the organization dropped the ball by not advocating for an extension throughout the season. Right now, Jones’s deal is set to run out at the end of this year, leaving him as an unrestricted free agent.
In an outburst of frustration, Jones threw his helmet down and knelt to the ground. This was all within a couple of hours after he took the injury. His resolve to fight his way back won over Colts management, who feel he could still be an important player in their future plans. They are cautiously hopeful that he will recover fully, and hope to know more about the full extent of his recovery by April.
As for the Colts, they’ll have a number of interesting options to weigh in determining Jones’s fate. If they decide to not commit to him with a long-term contract, they have the option of using the franchise tag. This tag will likely be in the $45-$46 million range for QBs. Continuing this path would give them the ability to keep Jones while figuring out his long-term recovery.
Jones has expressed sincere desire to extend his career with Indy. As he nears free agency, new suitors could come into play with much more appealing offers. The market may prove more lucrative with better value, sending him packing in either direction, as negotiations play out.
