Dani Alves, the prominent Brazilian soccer star, has had his sexual assault conviction quashed. It was through this lofty appeal that he proved his mettle and scored this epic win. The ruling by the Barcelona-based appeals court found that there was “insufficient evidence” to dismiss Alves’ presumption of innocence. As of February 2024, Alves had been found guilty for the assault of a woman at a Barcelona nightclub on New Year’s Eve in 2022. As a result, he is facing over four years and six months imprisonment.
During the administrative and criminal proceedings, Alves has always denied wrongdoing. After serving eleven months in prison, in March 2024 Hisashi was released from prison while awaiting a decision on his appeal. His most recent arrest in story above occurred while he was under contract and playing for Mexican side Pumas. The court’s recent ruling represents a dramatic reversal of fortune in the closely-watched case.
Dani Alves has had an extraordinary football life. He’s experienced tremendous success at some of the world’s biggest clubs—most notably Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. Alves’ influence on the history of Brazil’s national team can’t be overstated. He led his team to two Copa America victories and one Olympic gold, while playing at the jaw-dropping age of 38. He played in his third World Cup in 2022. Regrettably, he never won a big title at that promo during that time period.
The three-day trial that resulted in a guilty verdict against Alves ended there. Yet the recent appeal hearing not only examined the evidence presented at trial, it weighed all the available evidence and found it lacking to sustain the conviction. This decision now leaves Alves entirely cleared of these charges which had long since tarnished his otherwise glorious career.
