Brandon Williams, a 2020 NBA reserve for the Dallas Mavericks, was arrested on Saturday at DFW International Airport. Instead, the 25-year-old player now has a criminal charge for possession of marijuana. Authorities discovered just under two ounces of the substance in his checked luggage. Williams is going through a difficult period at the moment. He had missed the team’s last two games for personal reasons.
During his fourth season in the NBA, Williams has had a hard time finding his footing. Most recently, he’s averaged just 9.5 minutes per game over two games and has not yet produced any points on the score sheet. Though his arrest provided a significant setback, he still was able to be available for Wednesday night’s game.
On October 28, authorities arrested Gonzalez at his home. Shortly after, Williams took to social media to issue his apology for being a distraction to his squad and their fans.
“I can’t really go into further detail,” – Brandon Williams
Jason Kidd, the Mavericks’ head coach, spoke about the incident at a press conference. He noted the personal challenges that Williams is going through. Williams, he said, was dealing with severe emotional turmoil. This stress was from going to a friend’s funeral right before his arrest.
“Going to a funeral for a friend that’s passing, having that incident, that’s something that he has to deal with,” – Jason Kidd
As the dust settles, it will be both Williams and the Mavericks organization who will continue to deal with the fallout from this incident. The team said their priority is getting Williams suited up as much as possible, but they’ll start getting ready for the next game.
