In a strategic move aimed at bolstering their offensive line, the Dallas Cowboys selected Tyler Booker as the 24th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Booker, a talented rookie left guard from Alabama, came to the team to help shore up their pass protection for young signal-caller Dak Prescott. Prescott has been recovering from a right hamstring injury from last November as well.
Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones expressed optimism about Booker’s potential impact on Prescott’s performance. He insisted that they had to protect the quarterback while he recovered. That’s why they were comfortable selecting the raw young point guard.
Without doubt we were driven by the fact that it protects our quarterback, Jones stated. He further elaborated on the importance of a strong offensive line, noting, “If you look back to when we had top players on our offensive line…we give a lot of credit to the quality of the offensive line for having that kind of success.”
Tyler Booker arrives at a team that underwent a lot of turnover this past offseason. The Cowboys lost veteran tackle Tyron Smith to the New York Jets in free agency and drafted fellow first-round pick Tyler Guyton. Booker would likely team with Tyler Smith, a two-time Pro Bowl pick, to anchor the offensive line.
The Cowboys claim to want to establish a “physical” offense. Run-heavy head coach Brian Schottenheimer will be the one at the helm. To Schottenheimer, winning the battle at the line of scrimmage was of utmost importance when it came to winning football games. “After the turnover battle, the No. 1 way you win games is you own the line of scrimmage,” he said.
Tyler Booker said he really respected the Cowboys’ legacy of offensive line play. Reflecting on his childhood, he noted, “When I was growing up, the Cowboys always had a great offensive line. Always, always, always.” He hopes to carry on that legacy, likening his college career at Alabama to playing for the Dallas Cowboys.
Looking forward to learning and diving in together! I’ll do all I can to keep up that tradition right here in Dallas. His passion and commitment to excellence is contagious to his teammates and just as much to his coaching staff.
The Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel, Will McClay, praised Booker’s skills, stating that his grades are remarkably similar to those of former all-pro guard Zack Martin, who recently retired. That shows unrelated comparison highlights just how high the expectations are with which Booker will enter pro football.
Plus, even Jerry Jones has now parroted the importance of improving Prescott’s output with an improved offensive line. “We need to play to our strengths. Dak is a strength. Enhancing that makes all the sense in the world,” he stated. Making this move is in line with the Cowboys’ overall long-term plan of building an ideal support system around their quarterback.
Tyler Booker’s addition would be a big first step in recreating the elite offensive line that powered past Cowboys teams. The franchise hopes that his contributions, alongside those of Tyler Guyton and others, will lead to renewed success on the field.
