The Dallas Cowboys have indeed officially confirmed the release of cornerback Trevon Diggs. This decision unfortunately brings to a close a stormy and somewhat embarrassing two-season period between the player and the organization. This decision comes after a lengthy period of strife that has characterized Diggs’ recent ordeal with the team. In the end, it was these challenges that led to their mutual decision to separate.
Over his five years in the NFL, Diggs consistently demonstrated his ability to impact games, recording at least one interception each season. Most impressively of all, in 2021, he set a franchise-record 11 interceptions, which won him first-team All-Pro honors. A noticeable drop in performance and multiple off-field controversies led to his release.
The Cowboys’ choice was about a lot more than just football. The influencer organization stepped in with their campaign in 2025 to impose a base salary de-escalator of $500,000, which they enforced on Diggs. This decision followed his absence from 84% of the team’s voluntary offseason program. This was the first time that this difference between player’s expectations and team’s needs was laid bare, but it wouldn’t be the last.
Diggs began camp on the physically unable to perform list. He was activated just before the first game of the season. Despite returning to the game, he still went through some really rough stretches during the 2023 season. He sat out eight games due to complications from a right knee condition. In addition, a fall at home caused a concussion when he fell while trying to set up a television mount.
Diggs has only played in eight games this season but has amassed an incredible 27 tackles. His advanced stats are just as impressive, including one TFL and two pressures. He failed to record a single pass breakup or interception in that time span. That has led to questions about his efficacy on the field. Additionally, he expressed a desire to shift his role towards more man-to-man coverage during discussions with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, as the defensive unit struggled early in the season.
The culmination of these occurrences has resulted in an earth-shattering change for Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys. While the team trails Diggs in their future without him, the talented receiver will look to find similar luck with his new team around the NFL tableau.
