Dallas Cowboys Gear Up for First Padded Practice as Training Camp Begins

The Dallas Cowboys will open their first padded work of training camp this Sunday. That’s a great tackle on a big topic and an exciting move as they get ready for the upcoming NFL season! This year’s training camp will feature a number of big names. Under quarterback Dak Prescott’s leadership, both on the field and in the locker room, the Cowboys made magic in 2016.

Todd Archer, a seasoned NFL reporter who has covered the league since 1997 and the Dallas Cowboys since 2003, joined ESPN in 2010. His insights into the team’s dynamics and preparations will be crucial as the Cowboys look to build on their previous successes and overcome challenges.

With Micah Parsons temporarily unavailable, the team expects more from someone like Donovan Ezeiruaku. Parsons, one of the most exciting playmakers on the Cowboys’ defense, misses the Week 12 matchup. That opens the door for other players to take charge and prove themselves throughout training camp.

Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has to be salivating at the prospect of building this defensive unit into an elite juggernaut. You may remember that the Cowboys were the runaway league leaders in takeaways, interceptions, and defensive touchdowns last season. They did this remarkable turnaround under the leadership of Dan Quinn. Eberflus would obviously like to keep this pyramid of excellence going while working some new tricks into the mix.

“Guys know me. I don’t mind making bold predictions. I think we’re going to be one of the top takeaway teams in the league on defense,” said Brian Schottenheimer, indicating a high level of confidence in the defensive lineup.

The defensive roster will have multiple stud pass rushers, including DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong and Sam Williams. Sam Williams, last year’s second-round pick, is working his way back from a torn ACL. He’s projected to rebound and be the biggest key to the team’s improved run defense.

On the offensive side, Prescott’s leadership has been essential. He’ll be an instant favorite target for 2023 third-round pick QB Jake Ferguson and likely second-rounder WR George Pickens. With Prescott now at the helm, everybody around him is expecting Pickens to blow past his career-high 48 receptions this year.

The team’s strong camaraderie, born from intense rehearsal and their shared high-level training, has been key to their preparation. Schottenheimer’s staff had deliberate ways to create relationships between players, not just on the O-line, but among guys at all positions.

“What we try to do, it’s a brotherhood, it’s a fellowship,” Schottenheimer stated. When we run the stretch, offensive coaches to defensive players, defensive coaches to offensive players and they get a chance to mingle and show them, talk show them a little bit of s.
