As we move closer to the NFL Draft, predictions and speculation about what the Cowboys will do are spreading like wildfire. Nobody has looked at the Cowboys’ likely moves with a more scrutinizing eye than Todd Archer, ESPN’s NFL Nation reporter on the Cowboys beat. The group of players that the team is wrangling with now comes with its own particular challenge, as they currently don’t have a fourth-round selection. This lack of liquidity may affect their ability to bring in talent that will help them right quarterback Dak Prescott.
>One other interesting detail is how well the Cowboys may be set up to fare in Rounds 5, 6 and 7 with multiple selections. This depth in later rounds may provide them with opportunities to draft impactful players, but the team must act wisely to address pressing needs. The expected lack of elite talent at the top of the draft could make things trickier still.
One player who has really been raising eyebrows with his ability is Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. Measured at 6-foot-4, there is stuff to work with in terms of an elite catch radius and making plays on the ball. There’s considerable doubt he’ll even be on the board when the Cowboys make their first pick. Just the mere addition of a receiver of McMillan’s pestering qualities would do wonders for Prescott’s play. He deserves better offensive support too, as the team looks to do damage in the postseason.
So in addition to McMillan, check out a few other prospects who might be good fits with the Cowboys. Henderson, an RB with game-breaking speed, is easily one of the better local prospects coming out of DeSoto High School. His big-play, highlight-filled running style would add a critical element to a backfield filled with veterans.
Defensive needs loom large for Dallas. Shemar Turner, defensive tackle, Texas A&M. If picked, he would instantly boost the Cowboys’ d-line. Even on the current roster, his presence would help round out defensive pieces already in place and further elevate the team’s defensive execution.
The secondary is still a big concern for the Cowboys as well. Cobee Bryant, a cornerback from Kansas, has really impressed with his coverage abilities and represents added depth in this incredibly important and valuable position. Teammate Denzel Burke is another intriguing cornerback prospect from Ohio State. This local talent from DeSoto High School could really shore up the Wolverine’s shaky secondary.
At the same time, the Cowboys are conducting a tight end search in parallel. Luke Lachey from Iowa has shown promise as a versatile player who can contribute both in blocking schemes and as a receiving option. Pairing him with that skill set would provide Prescott with a valuable third option while giving the offense more flexibility overall.
Finally, Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan was part of the Cowboys’ Dallas Day workout. While Prescott remains firmly entrenched as the starter, exploring young talent like Henigan could provide valuable depth at the quarterback position.
As the draft nears, the Dallas Cowboys must balance their needs on both sides of the ball while navigating their limited picks. The decision-makers on each team will have to be diligent in calculating which prospects fit best with their immediate and long-term strategic aspirations. That makes the upcoming draft all the more interesting, potentially setting the stage for the future of this once proud franchise.
