Cade Cunningham delivered a stellar performance, scoring 40 points to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 107-97 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The game, held at the Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday night, marked a significant turnaround for the Pistons, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Cunningham's offensive prowess was on full display as he matched his season high in points on an impressive 17-of-30 shooting.
In a standout third quarter, Cunningham outscored his teammates 16-15, showcasing his ability to take charge when it mattered most. He scored eight of those points in the final 2:42 of the quarter, propelling the Pistons to a comfortable lead. Despite falling three points shy of his career-best 43 points, Cunningham’s contributions were crucial in securing the win.
Throughout the game, Cunningham not only excelled in scoring but also contributed six rebounds and four assists. His performance this season has been remarkable, as he is averaging career highs in multiple categories, including 25.3 points, 9.3 assists, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. January has been particularly fruitful for Cunningham, as he has scored at least 30 points in eight games.
The Pistons received additional support from Tobias Harris, who added 17 points, and Jalen Duren, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Their combined efforts helped stabilize the team and maintain their lead against a competitive Mavericks squad.
On the opposing side, P.J. Washington put forth a solid effort for the Mavericks with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Kyrie Irving led his team with 28 points. The Mavericks fought back, cutting the Pistons' lead to just two points at 93-91 with 10:13 left in the game. However, Detroit responded decisively with a 10-2 run while Cunningham rested on the bench, demonstrating their capacity to maintain momentum even without their star player on the court.
