Ruben Amorim of Manchester United is under increasing pressure. This period of woeful performances has plunged the team into a crisis, only three matches into the new season. Since Amorim took over, his track record has frighteningly worsened. He has experienced far more defeats than victories, leading many to question his long-term plan for the franchise.
In a historic defeat, Manchester United fell to a fourth-tier opposition for the first time ever, highlighting the severity of the current situation. Even the most devoted fans and specialists have started to doubt Jorge Amorim’s capacity to run the ship. His other promises of a “very clear identity” for Manchester United look more and more like wishful thinking given the club’s recent results.
Amorim had already advocated for such a long-term strategy to reenergize the club. The short-term results still haven’t delivered on this lofty ambition. In March, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a key figure in the club’s ownership structure, expressed confidence in Amorim’s capabilities, stating that he was doing “a great job.” With results still consistently disappointing, this optimism seems naïve at best.
Even with new £200 million forward trio fielded under Amorim, the man has struggled to convert such major investment into good results on the pitch. The promising trio of Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund, and Alejandro Garnacho has not been able to stem the tide. After another worrying, lacklustre performance, Amorim himself accepted that his approach has to change. He underscored that the team desperately needs an upgrade.
Omar Berrada, Manchester United’s chief executive, echoed this sentiment, reflecting a shared understanding among the club’s leadership that the current trajectory is unsustainable. Berrada noted, “As of this summer, the worst bit is going to be behind us,” signaling hope for a turnaround but acknowledging the pressing challenges ahead.
The coach’s frustration has become palpable. Amorim is looking forward to more decisive tactical shifts, after what the team demonstrated in the last two matches. He’s hoping to make big changes.
“Something has to change, and you are not going to change 22 players again.” – Ruben Amorim
Under Amorim, the record has been awful by any standard. With each match, the stakes get higher. It’s up to him, but not only to him, to get the entire team back on their winning track. Many observers wonder if his tactics align with the talent available and if he can truly instill the clear identity he had promised.
Despite such struggles to land new players to fit his quickly established system, Amorim does at least still have some familiar faces like Manuel Ugarte to name drop. The balance between youth and experience is key, but that balance hasn’t produced the promised outcomes thus far. The integration of young prospects like Mainoo and Hojlund signals a commitment to nurturing talent but raises questions about whether they are ready for such responsibility in high-stakes situations.
With Manchester United still underwhelming, Amorim’s management will come under the microscope as never before. With the club’s storied history comes high expectations for success and Revs fans are getting more impatient with each game that goes by without a win. This is where financial investment and on-field performance will collide in a critical way. This will be key to whether Amorim can come through this crisis and come out stronger, in a new and tougher world.
