Shohely Akhter, a former Bangladesh cricketer, has been banned for five years by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following her admission to five breaches of the anti-corruption code. The incidents took place during the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup. Akhter offered a fellow player £13,000 to get dismissed hit wicket in a match against Australia on February 14, 2023. Fortunately, the player reported the corrupt approach to the ICC's anti-corruption unit.
Akhter was not part of Bangladesh's squad for the World Cup, yet she attempted to influence the game from afar. Her offer was made through voice notes on Facebook, which led to her immediate downfall when the approached player chose integrity over corruption. This commendable action ensured that the ICC was promptly informed.
Despite having played 2 one-day internationals and 13 T20 matches for Bangladesh, Akhter has not represented her country since 2022. Her actions during the World Cup have now resulted in a significant consequence. The ICC imposed a five-year ban, preventing her from playing, coaching, officiating, or participating in any ICC-sanctioned matches during this period.
The ICC determined that a formal disciplinary process was unnecessary due to Akhter's admission of guilt.
"There was no need for a formal disciplinary process or hearing to be undertaken," stated the ICC.
The ICC further commented on the severity of the punishment.
"Ineligibility of five years is reasonable and proportionate," they concluded.
This decision underscores the ICC's stringent stance on maintaining the integrity of cricket. Akhter's ban highlights the ongoing battle against corruption in sports and serves as a warning to others who might consider similar misconduct. The ICC remains committed to protecting the sport's credibility through vigilant monitoring and decisive actions against breaches.
