Craig Bellamy Embraces Head Coach Role Amidst Challenges with Wales

Craig Bellamy’s recent news conference on Wednesday showcased a different tone as he reflected on his journey as the head coach of the Welsh national football team. Since his appointment in July 2024, Bellamy has experienced a mix of triumphs and challenges, culminating in a period of introspection regarding his role and future with the team.

Bellamy said he felt personally fulfilled in the role, calling the job the happiest he’d ever been. “Right now I’m living one of the greatest stages of my life,” he shared. The backing he has received from the football community in Wales goes a long way to energising his motivation. “As long as I am wanted and people believe I can add value to the team, I will remain committed to this role,” he stated.

The ex-international enjoyed a short-lived loan to Celtic in 2005. It is clear that he is definitely in favour of the change from manager to head coach. This distinction is a testament to his leadership style, which boasts a player-first, collaborative leadership style on and off the field. Even as his team has struggled in recent weeks, losing three games in a row, Bellamy is hopeful about what lies ahead. In the matches since his appointment, Wales has been on an incredible 9-match unbeaten run. With almost three years remaining on a four-year deal, his departure wouldn’t come cheap.

During the press conference, Bellamy referenced a quote from legendary manager Bill Shankly: “Some people think football is a matter of life and death… I can assure you it’s much more serious than that.” Shankly didn’t mean that literally, and Bellamy knows it. In fact, he has been able to change his approach and outlook on football to make it a more fun enterprise. Rather, he wants to create a culture that encourages the players and the fans to feel good.

Bellamy is already looking ahead to next March in the playoffs. He views this as a rare and fundamental opportunity to get Wales going in the right direction. While the team’s struggles on the pitch had certainly made things difficult, Bellamy’s determination to continue building resilience in his players never wavered. “We have to learn from our mistakes and work together to improve,” he added.
