Middlesex staged a remarkable fightback against Northamptonshire, led by Joe Cracknell, who scored an unbeaten 106, marking his maiden first-class century. The match unfolded at the County Ground in Northampton, where Cracknell’s resilient performance, alongside Leus du Plooy’s solid contribution of 66, helped Middlesex recover from a challenging position.
It was a rocky start to an innings that would set up the whole contest for Middlesex, coming up against a fiery Northamptonshire bowling unit. Yet it was the partnership between Cracknell and du Plooy that would be most instrumental. They contributed to two key partnerships of 60 runs apiece. First they united with Ryan Higgins, and then with Ben Geddes, building a platform for the middle overs.
Cracknell batted splendidly, scoring 110 off 164 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six. His innings were marked by glorious drives and muscular pulls. In particular, it was his driving of Broad through extra cover and pummelling of Guthrie through the same region that underlined his control and timing. He lined a half-tracker from Pope through midwicket, but that was just one of a variety of strokes he employed to keep the scoreboard moving.
Du Plooy’s innings was packed with finesse. He then cut an exceptional shot down the legside off Guthrie for four and drove him spellbindingly through cover. Through her experience, Du Plooy demonstrated his genius at creating coalitions. Unlike them, he first developed a vital strategic coalition with Higgins and then continued to shine in tandem with Geddes. His dismissal of Luke Procter was especially shocking as he swatted dismissively through mid-on.
The big moment of the day came when Cracknell joined Luke Hollman to put on a breathtaking stand giving the Sharks 103 runs in partnership. This mighty alliance changed the dynamics sharply in Middlesex’s favor. This magnificent partnership further testifies to the grit and spirit of the batting side and their will to bounce back from previous disappointments.
