The Dallas Cowboys are set to bolster their lineup as Trevon Diggs and Tyler Guyton will both take the field in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday. Here’s hoping both players stay injury-free! This very unexpected, but very great news, definitely lifts the spirits of the coaching staff and fans of the Cowboys.
Trevon Diggs, one of the cornerstones of the Cowboys’ defense, was reactivated on August 24. He was recently activated off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Since that time, he’s worked hard to make sure he was in top-tier shape. The last two weeks, he’s split time on the first-team defense and the scout team in practice. His return could not be more timely. Up until earlier in training camp, it wasn’t clear when he would first have an opportunity to see the field this season.
Tyler Guyton, another rising first-round pick in the 2024 draft, adds depth with valuable experience in the starting lineup. Last year he proved his on-field ability while starting 11 of the 15 games he played. During those ten days, Guyton went from rehab to the full-time first team. After feeling good in Monday’s practice, he sounded optimistic about his availability, giving himself an estimated 75-80% chance of playing.
Still, coaches have been wont to rave about Guyton’s off-the-field devotion. His teammates laud his work ethic when it comes to knowing the offense, knowing his line responsibilities. Meanwhile, Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, has indicated that managing Diggs’ playing time is easier compared to Guyton’s due to their respective positions.
While the news for both players is certainly encouraging, it’s worth mentioning that Diggs’ previous contract was amended before this current season. His contract contained a de-escalate clause that reduced his base salary by $500,000. This reduction occurred due to his failure to attend a minimum of 84% of the Cowboys’ offseason program. Diggs chose to continue his rehabilitation in South Florida, which further complicated his return.
Both players are now poised to make a significant impact. The Cowboys want to make an emphatic statement as they head to Philly to tussle with the Eagles, their division rivals. The impact they will make on the turf may be the deciding factor in achieving victory during this high-stakes faceoff.
