The Dallas Cowboys have made a strategic move to bolster their defense by acquiring cornerback Kaiir Elam from the Buffalo Bills. The trade, which was confirmed on Friday, involved the Cowboys receiving Elam and a sixth-round pick in exchange for a fifth-round pick this year and a seventh-rounder in 2026. This acquisition comes at a crucial time for the Cowboys as they look to reinforce their secondary with Trevon Diggs sidelined due to a knee injury.
Kaiir Elam, 24, was drafted in the first round by the Buffalo Bills in 2022. Over his three seasons with the team, Elam recorded two interceptions, although he has not added to that tally since his rookie year. Despite being a first-round pick, Elam found himself as a healthy inactive for several games, limiting his on-field contributions. Nevertheless, his potential remains evident, and he now has an opportunity to revive his career with the Cowboys.
Elam's arrival fills a critical gap in the Cowboys' defense, providing depth alongside DaRon Bland. With Trevon Diggs undergoing rehabilitation following a chondral tissue graft surgery on his left knee, Elam's presence will be vital in maintaining defensive strength. He brings experience from his time with the Bills and under new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who also coached him during his tenure in Buffalo.
Financially, Elam will earn a base salary of $5.99 million this year and is due a $1 million roster bonus on Sunday. As he enters the final year of his rookie contract, this season presents a pivotal opportunity for him to prove his value on the field.
