In a shocking twist, the Dallas Cowboys chose to bench wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. This decision followed a curfew-breaking incident involving the two players during a recent away game. The ruling followed the two stars being caught on camera at the Red Rock Casino, dining and drinking in the same establishment. The Cowboys had a commanding win against the Giants, opening their season with a 33-16 win. Yet the lack of both players raised professional eyebrows over the organization’s willingness to enforce discipline.
CeeDee Lamb continued to dazzle with five catches for 66 yards and a touchdown in his return to the field. He missed three games earlier in the season due to a high ankle sprain. Even with that hindrance, he still accumulated 40 receptions for 557 yards and found the end zone twice this year. George Pickens put on a show. He finished with a career-high-tying nine receptions for 144 yards, including a stunning 37-yard touchdown grab. Pickens’ dynamism has instantly energized the Cowboys, sparking the most improved offensive attack to ever set foot in Stillwater. He was able to catch 58 passes for 908 yards and seven touchdowns.
Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the incident, stating that “there were some things that were missed,” and confirmed that the players were made aware of the disciplinary action prior to the game. Schottenheimer said he wished he could keep Pickens with the Cowboys, and it was Pickens who made clear that he wanted the two to stay together as teammates.
“Sign me up. I mean, what do you say? Those two guys, I just love their relationship, man. I love the firepower that they give us,” – Brian Schottenheimer
Though that benching came with a lot of drama, Lamb and Schottenheimer’s relationship over the season seems to have grown closer. After Lamb’s touchdown, Schottenheimer was shown embracing the WRs, showing a coach/player dynamic that’s very encouraging.
Looking forward, Pickens will hit free agency after this season. This sudden turn of events has thrown his future with the team into chaos. Each player has stepped up in huge ways this season, and their speed and finesse provide terrific balance to the Cowboys’ offensive attack.
