Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Confident in Micah Parsons Contract Negotiations

Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, is feeling good about their upcoming contract negotiations with star linebacker Micah Parsons. He’s optimistic that a deal is possible. Speaking at a media availability, Jones said that he has spent direct time with Parsons. He’s working there, too, as he teams up with Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, to work out a long-term extension.

Jones made clear that although he believes the negotiations are critical, he does not see them as an emergency. He said that he and Parsons spent five or six hours together. They negotiated contract terms in the interim. This months-long discussion is a testament to Jones’s determination to arrive at a consensus that meets the needs of both parties.

I’ve never wished for anything I couldn’t have,” Jones said at the time. His confidence in being able to seal the deal with Parsons was through the roof. He highlighted his faith in Mulugheta, saying, “Like anyone with good sense, I hired people smarter than me. There isn’t anyone I’d trust more to the intricacies of negotiating a contract than David!”

Even with the two sides still in negotiations, Jones expects Parsons to be present for the first of the Dallas Cowboys’ new voluntary offseason program. He reassured fans and stakeholders alike that the current situation has not hindered the Cowboys’ ability to pursue other players. “The process of getting a deal done with Micah Parsons has not cost us the opportunity to sign other players,” he asserted.

Jones has candid conversations with iconic Cowboys players—Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Jason Witten and Tony Romo—about their contract disputes. He has been at the front end of working hand-in-hand with Parsons on these discussions. This experience certainly lends weight to his assurance that this will be one of the smoothest negotiations to date.

Jones still sees a bright outlook for Parsons’s long-term role with the franchise, asserting that the new linebacker is “just getting started.” He has taken Parsons to a number of long-term extension talks. He thinks there’s more smoke in the distance on these discussions than ever before, even in the case of past negotiations, such as with CeeDee Lamb just one offseason ago.

Other agents are starting to get frustrated with the Cowboys’ glacial negotiating process. Yet, Jones dismissed their worries, calling it “just not something that you should be concerned about.” Instead, he urged putting the player’s well-being and development ahead of the details of contract negotiations.

Parsons himself has taken a personal interest in the negotiation process and has reportedly expressed his appreciation for Mulugheta’s know-how. And he made it clear on Twitter that, “I will do no deal without @DavidMulugheta in the mix!” She promised fans that the contract negotiation process would be open. In his words, “There will be no secret doors in this contract negotiation.”

Jones’s comments are an excellent reminder of the Cowboys’ commitment to this level of open communication. This method allows them to create effective, robust, long-lasting connections with their stakeholders. He is hopeful that this strategy will put them in a strong negotiating position with Parsons.
