Cowboys Crown Brian Schottenheimer as Head Coach to Break Super Bowl Drought

Brian Schottenheimer, a seasoned veteran with 27 years of NFL experience, has been named the 10th head coach in the history of the Dallas Cowboys. His appointment follows a meticulous 12-day search by the Cowboys' management. Schottenheimer steps into the role after serving as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys over the past two seasons. At 77, he embarks on this leadership journey without having had any other head coaching interviews this cycle, marking him as a unique choice for the team.

Schottenheimer's interview with the Cowboys' ownership, led by Jerry Jones, spanned approximately four hours. This extensive discussion, coupled with his impressive track record of 200 regular-season victories as a head coach, solidified his candidacy. Notably, Schottenheimer was the first candidate without any prior ties to the Cowboys to be considered for the position. During his second interview on January 22, he elaborated on his strategic vision for the team, covering potential changes in offense, defense, practice schedules, and coaching staff.

"I actually had a card in my wallet that I had written down a goal," said Brian Schottenheimer during his introduction as head coach.

The hiring process began with a 90-minute virtual interview on January 17. Schottenheimer discussed his vision for the Cowboys with Jerry Jones, emphasizing his understanding of the team's dynamics and potential. Despite not being the youngest head coach, Schottenheimer's lifelong ambition and dedication to football were evident.

"You know, [you'd be] a first-time head coach, and I believe we're hanging around the rim. I think we've got in place a team that can get there right now. I had other coaches tell me that were wanting the job, '[This team is] right there. Right there,'" Jerry Jones remarked about the decision.

"I just can't take the risk of going with someone that was doing it for the first time." – Jerry Jones

"I know the players. I know the building. I know our strengths. I know our weaknesses. I know our issues. And the more and more we got into conversations, sitting around and just discussing different things, I wanted it even more." – Brian Schottenheimer

In his interviews, Schottenheimer not only addressed his ambitions but also reflected on his personal influences. His father, Marty Schottenheimer, was a legendary NFL coach whose legacy profoundly impacted him.

"Immediately, I went to seeing my father's face. And knowing how proud he would be of me." – Brian Schottenheimer

"My father was a legendary coach. A great man. But he's an incredible father. And he's impacted me more than anyone in this profession," he added.

The decision to hire Schottenheimer aligns with Jerry Jones's desire to secure an experienced leader capable of guiding the Cowboys back to playoff success.

"This is the best way that we can go to the playoffs and win," expressed Jerry Jones about their strategy moving forward.

"If we went that way [away from Schottenheimer], as much as we're going down the path, there'd be some heartbreak there [for us]," stated Jerry Jones Jr., highlighting the family's commitment to this decision.

Schottenheimer's familiarity with the team's environment stands as a significant asset as he transitions into his new role. His deep understanding of both the players and the organizational structure will be crucial as he implements his strategies aimed at enhancing team performance.
