Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer on the verge of sixth tattoo. Confirmed or not, this new addition will make another tremendous milestone and worth in his life. Since 2022, Schottenheimer has truly committed to the tattoo game. It’s made him passionate enough to create five tattoos that are extremely personal and really speak to his journey.
Four tattoos conspicuously adorn his left arm. A second tattoo is carved along the inside of his left forearm. The most famous of them by far is the tattoo “Jireh,” which means in Hebrew “The Lord will provide.” This piece rests just below his left elbow, serving as a daily reminder of faith and resilience.
“I just think as you get older, you get more comfortable with who you are,” Schottenheimer stated. He emphasized the importance of having tattoos that hold meaning, saying, “It’s something permanent. It’s something that’s important to you.”
Schottenheimer’s artistic voyage includes three nails formed into a cross. He placed them under the word “Jireh,” and it took him 25 minutes to finish this section of the artwork. All of his other tattoos needed to be done in shorter increments, 15 to 18 minutes at a time. One tattoo features “TN,” followed by the numbers 17, 27, and 19, symbolizing significant personal milestones.
Reflecting on his tattoos as reminders of his life experiences, Schottenheimer remarked, “My journey, like most Christians, has been up and down, and I knew I would never get one if it didn’t have meaning to me.” He too had mentioned wanting his tattoos to form an overarching narrative and help him relate with people.
Hey, why did you get that? Oh, I didn’t lose my dad or I lost my aunt. “I mean, Dak’s personal story with his leg is awesome,” Burleson said. He was talking about those tattoos with real meaning that his brother players have.
Among Schottenheimer’s tattoos is a matching one he got with his son, Sutton, who at the time was still several months shy of 18. The two enjoyed the joint experience in Kentucky, creating a memorable new chapter in their longstanding friendship.
He received his latest tattoo just eight weeks ago. This occurred on one of those brief respites between the Cowboys’ organized team activities and their June minicamp. Schottenheimer took his own exploratory trip to Artwerks in Nashville for this customized piece. In doing so, he thought about the loneliness and meditation that frequently go into tattoo choices.
“Especially when it’s a reminder. It’s who you are. It’s something that you’re proud of,” Schottenheimer noted as he discussed the deeper meanings behind his body art.
Looking down the road, Schottenheimer has some fun ideas for a future ink job. He says there’s one spot he plans to leave blank on his left forearm. He wants to create something that serves a greater purpose in that space. A replica Lombardi Trophy or Super Bowl ring would be ideal. Both are symbols of the ultimate professional football achievement.
“Grit encompasses everything that I believe it takes to be a champion,” he explained, underscoring the values he aims to instill in himself and those around him.
As he navigates the complexities of coaching and personal life, Schottenheimer’s tattoos serve as both reminders and affirmations of his journey. They represent both his belief and the maturity and self-assurance he’s cultivated through the years.
