Courtland Sutton is currently the Indianapolis Colts’ biggest free agency prize and leading wide receiver. He’s heading into a make or break season and looking to cement himself as a lock on the roster. For his part, Sutton had a monster 2024 season, reeling in a career-high 81 catches. Now, he’s poised to step into a huge role as the Broncos attempt to return to glory in a loaded AFC. With 1,081 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, Sutton recorded the second-highest totals of his seven-year career, underscoring his importance to the franchise.
At 29, Sutton is champing at the bit to prove a point. He’s playing on the last season of his 4-year, $60.8 million deal signed in 2021. Last year, he was nothing short of spectacular. His ability and performance on the field has resulted in him earning 100 percent of those $1.5 million in incentives tied to his contract. Sutton remains the obvious WR1 for the Broncos. His skill set will be crucial for a team clearly poised to make a deep run this season.
The receiver has expressed a strong desire to finish his career with the Broncos, emphasizing his commitment to the organization. “I think the best teams that perform the best on the field are the teams that are the most tight-knit off the field,” Sutton stated, highlighting the camaraderie he believes is essential for success.
Sutton’s intangible leadership qualities have been equally apparent to his teammates and coaching staff. Marvin Mims Jr., another receiver on the roster, remarked, “Court, you can always go to Court with a question about anything. Life, football, offense, whatever. He makes our room go.” This feeling is telling about Sutton’s impact, as a mentor and a calming force in the receiver room.
During the offseason, Sutton was at the forefront — and in the thick of things. It was his commitment to improving and building chemistry with his teammates that stood out. He showed up for training camp in good shape with other veterans and looked like he’d done the work this summer to build on 2021. Coach Sean Payton has recognized Sutton’s importance to the team’s offensive strategy, stating, “I think Courtland, he’s a resource for the team from a leadership perspective.”
Beyond his leadership abilities, Sutton succeeded statistically last season. He finished seventh in the league in tight-window targets. He shared this impressive achievement with Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals. Manufacturing offense This ability to come alive under duress has all but cemented his reputation as one of the Broncos’ core players.
During the past few weeks’ minicamps and organized team activities (OTAs), Sutton was able to develop that chemistry with new receivers Marvin Mims Jr. and Troy Franklin. Noticeably, he took most of the snaps with the starters. This creative pairing will prove to be essential as they both get ready to battle their opponents in this exciting new NFL season fast approaching.
General Manager George Paton sold Sutton on the idea of being a long-term piece with the franchise. He suggested that negotiations were continuing over a possible new agreement. Though details are still few, Coach Payton did reveal that there are active discussions on contracts with a number of players. “There’s a number of guys — you’re going to ask me about contracts some that are being worked on,” he noted. He noted that communication continues to be strong on these negotiations.
Like last offseason, Sutton skipped out on all of the voluntary workouts out of desires to earn a new deal. This year, though, he proved his commitment to the team by reporting for all offseason OTAs. Beyond his refined capabilities, he had no shortage of visibility from directly competing against teammates in camp. His actions display his proactive approach to ensuring his singular focus is on helping the Broncos’ performance in 2024 and beyond.
With anticipation sky high for the Denver Broncos this season, Sutton’s developing role will be an important aspect in their success. This is where his tremendous talent, experience and leadership all shine through. He’s been an invaluable part of the coaching staff and a great resource to all his teammates.
