Corey Conners Withdraws from U.S. Open Due to Wrist Injury

Canadian golfer Corey Conners has now officially made good his withdrawal from the U.S. Open. He hurt a right wrist injury in the process during the tournament. Conners, one of the 20 top-50 players in the field at the WGC-Match Play, felt pain start after hitting a bunker shot during Thursday’s first round. Even though he was determined to push through after the injury happened, he made it worse while playing in Saturday’s round, causing the withdrawal decision to come.

In the opening round, Conners had trouble with the back nine. He finished the round 5 over par, for a total score of 2-over 72. He’d opened up with great form, even managing to shoot a stunning 3-under 32 on the front nine during that third round. He made another incredible bunker shot from the border of the 11th hole, but the back flared up again. This was enough to make him go get checked out.

“I didn’t think he was going to play the rest of the way,” said fellow competitor Michael Kim, reflecting on Conners’ condition during the tournament.

Despite being seen by a physician for about 15 minutes, Conners decided to complete the first round. The worsening of his wrist injury soon after led him to withdraw from continued competition.

Poised for a big year, Conners has started strong and with plenty of momentum. He’s tallied five top-10s and ten top-25s in his first 15 starts on tour. Most recently, he finished tied for eighth at the Masters this past spring and is currently ranked 21st in the world rankings. In addition, he currently ranks ninth in the season-long FedEx Cup points standings, a reflection of his solid play the entire season.

The two-time PGA Tour winner has WD’d from the field. It’s a huge disappointment, especially during what’s otherwise been a stellar breakout year for him on tour. He was to have tee’d it up next with Ryan Fox at the U.S. Open, before this tragic twist of fate.
