Cooper Rush Signs with Baltimore Ravens as Backup Quarterback

Cooper Rush Signs with Baltimore Ravens as Backup Quarterback

@CooperRush9 has officially signed with the Baltimore Ravens! He came at a price; he signed a two-year contract encompassing $6.2 million total with $4 million guaranteed. The young quarterback was in for an unexpected and very rough training camp. He just couldn’t find a groove with the squad and really come into a rhythm. Rush, 31, is expected to become the No. 2 QB behind Lamar Jackson. The Ravens are looking forward to an incredible 2020 NFL season!

Rush’s signing with Baltimore comes after an impressive tenure as a fill-in starter, including a 9-5 record as a fill-in starter. Over the course of his career, he’s thrown 20 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Rush struggled in his first preseason action with the Ravens. That first pass went for an interception, burying what should have been a victory on his outstanding passing performance. This early setback added to the concerns some may have had over his preparedness to step into the backup role.

The Ravens recognized Rush’s potential, especially given his previous performances. Todd Monken, the Ravens’ offensive coordinator, has openly admired Rush’s skills, stating that both he and Jackson share a similar mental approach to the game. Monken noted, “They’re similar in terms of their mental approach to the game,” highlighting their ability to read defenses and make accurate throws.

Rush, looking back on his choice to come to Baltimore, spoke about how the opportunity arose suddenly. “Baltimore came out of nowhere early on in that week,” he explained, adding that once he considered it, he thought, “Oh man, that’s a good place to be.” He admitted that going back to the Dallas Cowboys was a possibility at one point in free agency. As for there being any hard feelings regarding his not starting in last year’s regular season finale, however, he wouldn’t hear of it.

Rush made it clear that he wanted to show out for his new squad. “I’ve been really trying to show [my] current team I’m doing well,” he stated, indicating his determination to earn the trust of the Ravens’ coaching staff and players.

Rush just missed out on bringing home an additional $250,000 last season. He had to start the regular season finale and play in a minimum of 55% of the offensive snaps to reach it. That chance never came to pass, as he made the move from Dallas to Baltimore.

As Rush prepares for his role with the Ravens, he remains focused on contributing to a team known for its offensive weapons. He expressed confidence in their abilities to win crucial games, stating, “Baltimore was just a chance to go on a really good team that if you’ve got to go in [the game], you can go do it and win games, important games [for] a team that’s in it and a team that’s got tons of weapons at every position.”

With Rush officially signed, the Ravens must be salivating at what he can bring to the table in 2023 and beyond. Despite being last year’s winners of the highly competitive N.A., as they navigate through training camp and prepare for the regular season, all eyes will be on how Rush adapts and performs in his backup role under Monken’s guidance.
