This partnership stands as New Zealand’s second highest opening stand in Test cricket history and is the joint 12th highest opening stand in men’s Test cricket overall.
Conway, who was still unbeaten at 178, batted 279 balls and hit 25 fours during his stay. This performance was exceptional — his sixth Test century — and underlined his potential to dominate all West Indies bowlers. His efforts proved invaluable to New Zealand’s cause, as they ended the day well placed at 334-1.
The partnership between Conway and Latham spanned an impressive 86.4 overs, allowing them to wear down the West Indies attack. The two batsmen were on the same page with their game plan going into the historic match. Conway emphasized the importance of what she called batting big and batting well. This further strategy is meant to provide their own bowlers with the best base possible when defending the fourth innings.
