Controversial Draw Ends Rangers’ Season at Hibernian

Rangers’ 2021 campaign came to a controversial end with a 2-2 draw against Hibernian at Easter Road. Ultimately, the game provided plenty of dramatic flashes to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Each side notched two goals apiece, and some routine and spectacular saves by the keepers later proved crucial in deciding the result.

Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring for Rangers in the first half. His golden strike exchanged plenty of gloom for a sense of optimism on the traveling team’s end. His opener was the result of a beautifully manufactured short corner routine from James Tavernier, and it helped serve to kickstart what would be a feisty affair. Hibernian’s response was immediate and impactful. Kieron Bowie equalized just three minutes later to show the spirit of Hibernian.

And the home side didn’t let up. Martin Boyle took advantage of a defense mistake to double Hibernian’s lead. This was a major turning point in the match, launching Rangers into an inevitable must-respond situation not long after. The Rangers prevailed and leveled through Nicolas Raskin. He eventually got the goal after Jordan Smith failed to keep his first shot at bay, allowing Raskin to follow up and put one home.

The hosts were dealt a cruel blow when Leon Balogun had to leave the field with injury as early as the 10th minute. Manager Philippe Clement countered just as quickly, pulling him for Robin Propper. This early adjustment shifted the focus of Rangers’ defensive strategy. They went out and battled tooth and nail to preserve their lead and protect a truly stunning upset victory.

Goalkeeper Jordan Smith was a standout player for Hibernian, putting in a number of key saves to keep her side in contention. He saved Vaclav Cerny and then denied Danilo in the 62nd minute to keep Hibernian in the hunt for a valuable away point. Smith’s efforts were equally important in ensuring that Hibernian would stay unbeaten at home since November 9.

David Gray brought in four notable changes to Hibernian’s starting 11. This tactical retreat is the reorientation of a flagging campaign that has recently come under new management. Barry Ferguson, who succeeded Philippe Clement as Hibernian boss, has overseen six wins from his 15 matches in charge, demonstrating his capability to navigate the challenges of managing a competitive squad.

The final had the world hooked with its gripping action. Beyond the scoreboard, though, it had a huge impact on the trajectory of both teams’ seasons. Struggles late in the season aside, Rangers showed signs of a strong future with the likes of Raskin and Dessers both having an immediate impact on matches. Hibernian’s draw was a testament to their impressive home form and defensive resolve. Now, they are excited to continue to expand upon this momentum going forward.
